Allergic skin disease and atopic dermatitis

Itching, paw licking, face rubbing and recurrent skin or ear inflammation may be allergy-related.

Veterinary assessment needed

Go to a clinic immediately if

  • The face or throat swells rapidly, breathing is difficult, the pet collapses or broad areas of skin become wet and very painful
Contact a veterinary clinic

Possible signs

  • Itching, paw licking, face rubbing, recurrent otitis, redness or hair loss
  • Itching recurs seasonally, disrupts sleep or the skin develops odour, crusting or darkening

Contact a veterinarian today if

  • Seek same-day care if skin is painful, produces pus, spreads rapidly or itching prevents the pet from resting

What it is

Itch has many causes: fleas, environmental allergens, food, parasites or infection. Atopic dermatitis often needs long-term management and cannot be confirmed by signs alone.

What to expect at the veterinarian

The veterinarian will assess skin and ears, rule out parasites and infection, and may plan a food-elimination trial or allergy management.
