Possible signs

  • Scooting, licking under the tail, strong odour, painful swelling or pus
  • The dog avoids sitting, cries while passing stool or develops a small draining opening beside the anus

Contact a veterinarian today if

  • Painful swelling, pus, blood or difficulty passing stool needs same-day assessment

What it is

Anal sac material may fail to empty, thicken, become infected or form an abscess. Worms, allergy and other disease can cause similar signs.

What to expect at the veterinarian

The veterinarian will inspect the area, gently assess the sacs and plan expression, flushing, pain relief or other treatment if infection or an abscess is present.
