Go to a clinic immediately if
- Breathing is difficult, gums turn blue, weakness is profound, the dog collapses or a puppy stops eating and drinking
Possible signs
- A dry hacking cough, gag-like sound, sneezing, nasal discharge or fever
- Cough may worsen with excitement or lead pressure, but breathing difficulty should not be dismissed as simple kennel cough
Contact a veterinarian today if
- Seek same-day care for fever, a wet cough, poor appetite, lethargy or increased breathing rate
What it is
“Kennel cough” is not one disease; several viruses and bacteria can cause it. Many cases are mild, but puppies, older or vulnerable dogs can become more seriously ill.
What to expect at the veterinarian
The veterinarian will assess temperature, breathing and lungs. Severe, prolonged or outbreak-linked illness may require PCR, radiographs or other tests.
