Urinary incontinence in dogs

Urine leakage during sleep or rest, a wet bed and frequent licking around the genitals may indicate incontinence.

Veterinary assessment needed

Go to a clinic immediately if

  • No urine can be passed, the abdomen is very painful, the hind limbs suddenly weaken or the dog collapses
Contact a veterinary clinic

Possible signs

  • Urine leakage during sleep or rest, a wet bed, skin irritation or genital licking
  • Leakage often occurs during sleep without awareness; frequent deliberate urination suggests a different problem

Contact a veterinarian today if

  • Seek same-day care if leakage is accompanied by blood, pain, fever, marked thirst or sudden weakness

What it is

Incontinence is involuntary leakage, not bad behaviour. Causes include weak urethral closure, urinary infection, neurologic or anatomic disease and excessive urine production.

What to expect at the veterinarian

The veterinarian will distinguish leakage from frequent or behavioural urination. Urinalysis and culture are common; blood tests or imaging may also be needed.
