Cat bite wounds and abscesses

Painful swelling, fever, lethargy, lameness or a draining wound after a fight may indicate an abscess.

Veterinary assessment needed

Go to a clinic immediately if

  • The cat is profoundly weak, struggles to breathe, swelling involves the face or throat, collapses or bleeds heavily
Contact a veterinary clinic

Possible signs

  • Painful swelling, fever, poor appetite, lameness or a draining wound after a fight
  • A small bite can hide under fur and become a warm painful swelling several days later

Contact a veterinarian today if

  • Have any deep bite, lameness, fever or poor appetite after a fight assessed the same day

What it is

A cat tooth carries bacteria deep beneath the skin while the small surface puncture closes quickly. Pus may collect over several days and the abscess can rupture.

What to expect at the veterinarian

The veterinarian will look for punctures, assess fever and pain, and may open, flush and drain the site. Pain relief and an appropriate antibiotic may be prescribed.
