Feline lower urinary tract disease and cystitis

Frequent urination, straining, blood in urine or urinating outside the tray are lower urinary tract signs. Producing no urine raises an emergency concern for obstruction.

Veterinary assessment needed

Go to a clinic immediately if

  • The cat repeatedly strains with no urine or only drops, has a painful abdomen, vomits or weakens
Contact a veterinary clinic

Possible signs

  • Frequent small urinations, straining, blood, genital licking or urinating outside the tray
  • The cat enters the tray often, cries, licks the genitals after trying to urinate or urinates in unusual places

Contact a veterinarian today if

  • If urine is produced but repeated straining, pain or blood continues, have the cat assessed today

What it is

Signs may result from idiopathic cystitis, stones, a urethral plug or other causes. Bacterial infection is much less common in young otherwise healthy cats than many owners assume.

What to expect at the veterinarian

The veterinarian will assess the bladder and obstruction risk, then may use urinalysis, culture and imaging. Treatment depends on the exact cause.
