Intestinal parasites

Diarrhea, weight loss, a pot belly, poor coat or a visible worm may indicate intestinal parasites, although infected pets often have no signs.

Veterinary assessment needed

Go to a clinic immediately if

  • A puppy or kitten is profoundly weak, has pale gums, bloody diarrhea, vomiting or collapse
Contact a veterinary clinic

Possible signs

  • Diarrhea, weight loss, a pot belly, poor coat, vomiting or a visible worm
  • Some animals show no obvious sign, so risk-based fecal testing may still be appropriate

Contact a veterinarian today if

  • Seek same-day care if a young animal stops eating, vomits repeatedly or weakens with diarrhea

What it is

Dogs and cats can carry roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms and protozoa. Risk varies with age, lifestyle and region.

What to expect at the veterinarian

The veterinarian will assess risk and choose appropriate fecal testing. One negative sample cannot always exclude every parasite; treatment depends on the organism.
