Lameness and limb pain

Reduced weight-bearing, an unusual gait or reluctance to move or jump may indicate pain.

  • The limb cannot be used, bone is exposed, major trauma occurred, the limb is cold or the pet cannot stand
Contact a veterinary clinic

Possible signs

  • Limping, guarding a limb, reluctance to move or jump, swelling or pain
  • Lameness may appear after rest, during activity or only with a particular movement

Contact a veterinarian today if

  • Seek same-day care if lameness is severe, began suddenly, has swelling or is not improving within 24 hours

What it is

Lameness is a sign, not a diagnosis. Causes include claw or paw injury, strain, joint disease, fracture, neurologic disease or infection.

What to expect at the veterinarian

The veterinarian will assess gait, paws, bones, joints and neurologic function. Radiographs or other tests may be needed.
