Overweight and obesity

If the ribs are difficult to feel, the waist has disappeared or movement is harder, a pet may be overweight. Weight loss needs a safe plan.

Veterinary assessment needed

Go to a clinic immediately if

  • Weight gain accompanies breathing difficulty, collapse, sudden abdominal enlargement or profound weakness
Contact a veterinary clinic

Possible signs

  • Ribs are difficult to feel, the waist is absent, the abdomen sags or the pet tires easily
  • Weight rises over several weeks, movement becomes harder or the pet tolerates heat less well than before

Contact a veterinarian today if

  • Seek same-day care if an overweight cat stops eating or the pet has obvious breathing difficulty with movement

What it is

Obesity is a chronic disease that increases the risk of diabetes, joint pain, breathing problems and other illness. Appearance alone is not enough; body-condition and muscle-condition scores are used.

What to expect at the veterinarian

The veterinarian will assess body and muscle condition, diet, activity and associated disease. Blood or urine tests may be indicated, followed by a calorie, activity and monitoring plan.
