FortiFlora

for cats, probiotic, 1 g sachet, complementary feed
Assessed clinical scopeCat · Nutritional adjunct for feline transient loose stool or intestinal-microflora disturbance associated with stress, diet change or antibacterial treatment, including appraisal of broader marketed GI and immune-support claims · By mouth
Care settingVeterinarian-directed home nutritional adjunct after triage, alongside hydration, diet and diagnosis-directed care when indicated.
vetman score 7.6/10 Good
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Not a medicine · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A well-characterised, safe and easy feline adjunct with direct but still limited evidence for selected transient and antibiotic-associated loose stool; it is not a universal diarrhoea treatment or proof of broad immune benefit.

Regulatory and scientific credibility7.5/10

The exact 1 g product, strain, viable count, storage and directions are transparent, and NCIMB 10415 has current EU feed-additive authorisation through 2034 plus EFSA safety review; this is not medicinal approval and broader product claims remain unevenly studied.

Clinical efficacy6.5/10

Exact-strain controlled studies show fewer sustained shelter-diarrhoea episodes and lower amoxicillin-clavulanate-associated diarrhoea scores, with a 2026 mechanistic reanalysis; however samples were small or room-clustered, the reanalysis is not independent replication and broader chronic/immune claims remain unproved.

Safety and tolerability8.0/10

Current EFSA review concludes NCIMB 10415 remains safe for cats and dogs under authorised conditions, with no acquired AMR genes or virulence identified; exact-product trials show reassuring tolerability and the viable count is guaranteed, but rare events and use in severely immunocompromised or critically ill patients are not well characterised.

Clinical practicality9.0/10

One complete sachet once daily, no weight calculation, food-top administration and 2–25°C storage make use highly feasible; antibacterial separation, course continuation, pork/poultry protein and preserving organism viability are the main practical constraints.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Price not assessed: no verified current Georgian full-course/patient price was available.

Important safety and use flags

  • Complementary feed, not a medicinal product. EU authorisation applies to the NCIMB 10415 feed additive under specified conditions and does not establish every FortiFlora marketing claim.
  • Use only as an adjunct after triage. Do not delay oral/IV fluids, diagnostic testing, dietary management, antiparasitic or other cause-specific treatment when indicated.
  • Severe or persistent diarrhoea, dehydration, blood, repeated vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, suspected obstruction or sepsis, weight loss, recurrence or failure to improve requires prompt reassessment.
  • Feline benefit is supported by direct controlled studies, but samples were small or room-clustered and broader chronic-enteropathy, FHV-1 and generic immune-support efficacy is not established.
  • Give one complete 1 g sachet once daily sprinkled on regular food; do not invent weight bands or transfer doses from another strain, blend, concentration or presentation.
  • During antibacterial treatment give daily and continue for one week after the last dose; ideally separate by at least two hours to protect viability. This does not guarantee prevention of antibiotic-associated dysbiosis.
  • Contains pork and poultry protein. Review compatibility with a strict elimination-food trial or suspected relevant food hypersensitivity before use.
  • Store at 2–25°C and protect the live organism from unsuitable heat, moisture and contamination. Do not assume an improperly stored or expired sachet retains its labelled viable count.
  • EFSA found the concentrated additive to be a respiratory sensitiser and could not conclude on skin sensitisation. Avoid inhaling powder, minimise aerosolisation and use extra handling care for sensitised staff.
  • Current species-specific manufacturer guidance permits use from weaning and during pregnancy/lactation, but critically ill or severely immunocompromised animals still require an individual veterinary benefit-risk decision.

for dogs, probiotic, 1 g sachet, complementary feed
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Nutritional adjunct for canine transient loose stool or intestinal-microflora disturbance associated with stress, diet change or antibacterial treatment, including appraisal of broader marketed GI, flatulence and immune-support claims · By mouth
Care settingVeterinarian-directed home nutritional adjunct after triage, alongside hydration, diet and diagnosis-directed care when indicated.
vetman score 7.3/10 Good
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Not a medicine · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A well-characterised, safe and easy canine adjunct, but direct clinical benefit is modest and inconsistent; it may support selected transient loose-stool care without replacing diet, hydration, diagnosis or cause-specific treatment.

Clinical efficacy5.5/10

A small adjunct-to-metronidazole shelter trial improved the proportion of normal-stool days but not the day-7 primary comparison, while the larger shelter study found no canine difference; systematic reviews find no clearly clinically important class effect and broader chronic, flatulence and immune claims are not established.

  • Severe or persistent diarrhoea, dehydration, blood, repeated vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, suspected obstruction or sepsis, weight loss, recurrence or failure to improve requires prompt reassessment.
  • Canine direct evidence is mixed: one small adjunct trial improved normal-stool days but not the day-7 comparison, another shelter study was negative, and systematic reviews do not show a robust clinically important class effect.
  • Give one complete 1 g sachet once daily sprinkled on regular food; do not invent weight bands or transfer doses from another strain, blend, concentration or presentation.
