vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Off-label use
A transparent but off-label human formulation with credible gentamicin activity for selected susceptible superficial canine infection. Product-specific preservative/phosphate risks and the absent veterinary regimen keep it below a situational choice; progressive ulcer disease needs urgent broader care.
Regulatory and scientific credibility 6.0/10
Exact current composition, 5 ml presentation and 28-day in-use life are transparent, with current Georgian and Portuguese human registrations. Same-strength EU and FDA veterinary controls support plausibility, but Gentocil itself has no dog/cat authorisation or product-specific veterinary dossier.
Clinical efficacy 6.5/10
Same-strength veterinary labels and FDA approval establish gentamicin activity for susceptible superficial dog ocular infection. Canine keratitis series show useful but population- and organism-dependent susceptibility: gentamicin may cover Pseudomonas yet fail beta-haemolytic Streptococcus, and severe progressive ulcers often need culture-led combination and procedural care.
Safety and tolerability 5.0/10
Topical systemic exposure is low, but exact Gentocil contains 0.01% benzalkonium chloride and phosphate buffers with explicit damaged-corneal-surface irritation and rare severe-corneal-calcification warnings. Epithelial defect, pain, allergy and resistant bacterial/fungal superinfection are reported; safety depends on corneal diagnosis, limited exposure and early reassessment.
Clinical practicality 4.5/10
A sterile ready-to-use 5 ml dropper and 28-day in-use life are familiar, but no exact veterinary Gentocil regimen exists. Painful-eye restraint, potentially frequent dosing, multiple-drop sequencing, contamination control and rapid recheck can be substantial; severe disease cannot be managed as routine home monotherapy.
Full-course cost-effectiveness -
Current Georgian full-course price and an exact veterinary Gentocil regimen were unavailable; price is excluded from the denominator.
Important safety and use flags
Scope boundary: this score covers only diagnosed susceptible superficial bacterial ocular infection. It does not score every human-label indication, prophylaxis, an undiagnosed red eye or non-bacterial conjunctivitis/keratitis. Human ophthalmic product; all dog/cat use is off-label. Exact Gentocil contains gentamicin 3 mg/ml, benzalkonium chloride 0.1 mg/ml and phosphate buffers. Do not transfer this score to another gentamicin strength, preservative system, ointment, ear or injectable product. Complete ocular examination and fluorescein staining are mandatory. Stromal infiltrate or malacia, deep ulcer, descemetocele, perforation, marked uveitis, glaucoma, vision loss or suspected intraocular infection requires urgent ophthalmic escalation—not routine home monotherapy. Use cytology and culture/susceptibility for ulcerative, severe, progressive, previously treated, recurrent or poorly responsive disease. Gentamicin coverage is organism- and region-dependent; do not assume that a listed spectrum proves susceptibility. Formulation-specific corneal warning: 0.01% benzalkonium chloride may irritate or injure a dry/damaged epithelial surface, and phosphate can rarely calcify a severely damaged cornea. Reconsider frequent exposure or choose an appropriate preservative-free/alternative formulation when the surface is compromised. Stop and reassess transient burning that persists, increasing pain, redness, tearing, photophobia, opacity, discharge, pruritus, blurred/altered vision, epithelial defect, hypersensitivity or bacterial/fungal superinfection. Do not mask deterioration by simply increasing frequency. No exact Gentocil dog/cat regimen is established. The human schedule, Gentamicin WZF veterinary schedule and FDA comparator schedule are not interchangeable defaults; frequency and duration require an individual prescription and early response review. Ophthalmic surface use only: never inject subconjunctivally or into the globe. Separate concurrent eye drops as instructed, apply ointment last, and verify compatibility rather than mixing medicines in the bottle or on the dropper. Pregnancy/lactation: exact dog/cat reproductive safety is not established. Use only after veterinary benefit–risk assessment; reduce nasolacrimal/systemic exposure where clinically appropriate and prevent licking of overflow. Wash hands, do not touch the sterile tip to eye, lashes, skin or fingers, recap immediately and never share between patients. Store at or below 25°C, record opening date and discard 28 days after first opening.

Off-label use
A transparent off-label formulation with useful feline gentamicin susceptibility evidence, but not a default for the feline red eye. FHV/Chlamydia differentials, difficult repeated dosing, corneal-relevant excipients and no exact cat regimen keep its value weak and diagnosis-dependent.
Same-strength veterinary labels/FDA approval include cats, and a culture-confirmed feline keratitis series found 89% overall gentamicin susceptibility. That is meaningful but in-vitro/class evidence, not an exact Gentocil outcome, and it does not justify treating common feline viral or chlamydial disease as bacterial.
Safety and tolerability 5.0/10
Topical systemic exposure is low, but exact Gentocil contains 0.01% benzalkonium chloride and phosphate buffers with explicit damaged-corneal-surface irritation and rare severe-corneal-calcification warnings. Epithelial defect, pain, allergy and resistant bacterial/fungal superinfection are reported; safety depends on corneal diagnosis, limited exposure and early reassessment.
Clinical practicality 4.0/10
The ready 5 ml dropper is simple, but feline restraint, dropper avoidance and potentially frequent dosing are often difficult, while no exact Gentocil cat regimen exists. Diagnostic separation from FHV/Chlamydia, product sequencing, contamination control and rapid recheck add clinically necessary burden.

Off-label in dogs/cats. Exact veterinary frequency and duration are not established for Gentocil; do not transfer the human or another brand’s regimen automatically. Use only after full ocular examination, fluorescein staining, tear/eyelid/foreign-body assessment and cytology/culture where indicated. Recheck early. Keep the dropper sterile, separate other eye medicines and use ointment last.
