vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Hepastabilan

60 tablets, complementary feed, Vebiot
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Adjunctive nutritional support of physiological liver function after defining the underlying hepatobiliary disorder and cause-specific treatment plan · By mouth
Care settingVeterinarian-directed home adjunct within a diagnosis-specific nutrition, treatment and monitoring plan.
vetman score 5.8/10 Weak evidence support
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Not a medicine · Verified on 15 Oct 2026

A plausible, practical canine liver-support feed with a limited predecessor-product biomarker signal, but opaque current amounts and no exact-product clinical-outcome evidence keep it a weak adjunct rather than treatment.

Regulatory and scientific credibility5.0/10

The exact current pack, category, qualitative composition, tablet handling and six dose cells are traceable, but active amounts, complete label and quality controls are unpublished; the cited study used predecessor Hepaxan and current-formula equivalence is not proved.

Clinical efficacy5.5/10

A small Hepaxan study found improved surrogate liver markers in an uncontrolled 15-dog disease arm, while ACVIM and reviews support biological plausibility but emphasise limited clinical evidence; exact Hepastabilan outcomes and disease-specific benefit are unproved.

Safety and tolerability6.0/10

Related SAMe/silybin use is generally tolerated and the small predecessor study was reassuring, but exact current quantities, long-term target-animal cohorts and reproductive/juvenile data are absent; supplement stacking and polypharmacy remain material.

Clinical practicality7.5/10

Once-daily neutral tablets, quarter scoring and permission to split, crush or dissolve are workable at home; six cells, fractional-weight gaps and up to three tablets daily still require deliberate selection and adherence.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

No verified current Georgian price and no evidence-defined course duration; price not assessed.

Important safety and use flags

  • Complementary feed, not a veterinary medicine. Category-correct “not applicable” medicine-authorisation status does not establish regulator-reviewed efficacy, quantitative composition or safety.
  • The current manufacturer page lists only yeast products, herbal complex, vitamin E and zinc. Per-tablet amounts repeated by distributors are not verified current manufacturer data and must not be used to calculate mg/kg exposure.
  • The manufacturer-cited 2021 study explicitly used Vebiot Hepaxan, not current Hepastabilan. No primary source proves identical formulation, manufacturing controls or bioavailability.
  • Use only the six printed once-daily weight cells. They leave fractional-weight gaps between 5/6, 10/11 and 15/16 kg; do not interpolate or turn the conflicting “1 tablet per 3–5 kg” prose into a continuous rule.
  • Adjunct only. Do not delay diagnosis or cause-specific treatment of hepatic failure, biliary obstruction, infection, toxin injury, copper-associated disease, lipidosis, cholangitis, pancreatitis or neoplasia.
  • Splitting, crushing or dissolving is manufacturer-permitted, but this does not make yeast-derived SAMe pharmacokinetically equivalent to the stable enteric-coated SAMe formulation used in feline research.
  • Review the complete diet and all liver/antioxidant supplements. Avoid unintended duplicate zinc, vitamin E, SAMe or silybin exposure; excess vitamin E can interfere with vitamin K/coagulation.
  • High-dose silybin may inhibit CYP enzymes and P-glycoprotein. Review polypharmacy, narrow-therapeutic-index medicines, antiplatelet/anticoagulant treatment and planned procedures.
  • Monitor appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, weight and disease-appropriate liver biochemistry/imaging. A change in enzymes is a surrogate response, not proof that the underlying disease is controlled.
  • No regulator-reviewed, quantitative or independent exact-product evidence establishes long-term, pregnancy/lactation, breeding, juvenile or severe-hepatic-disease safety; use only after an individual benefit-risk review.

vetman score 5.3/10 Weak evidence support
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Not a medicine · Verified on 15 Oct 2026

A practical but weakly evidenced feline liver-support feed: current amounts and exact-product outcomes are unpublished, and the available cat SAMe evidence uses a materially different enteric formulation.

Regulatory and scientific credibility5.0/10

The exact current pack, category, qualitative composition, tablet handling and six dose cells are traceable, but active amounts, complete label and quality controls are unpublished; the cited study used predecessor Hepaxan and current-formula equivalence is not proved.

Clinical efficacy4.0/10

No exact-product feline disease-outcome trial was found. A different high-dose enteric-coated SAMe product altered redox measures in 15 healthy cats, which supports plausibility but not current Hepastabilan efficacy, dose equivalence or clinical benefit.

Safety and tolerability5.5/10

A different enteric SAMe product caused no overt toxicity in 15 healthy cats, but exact Hepastabilan exposure, repeated-use safety in liver disease and reproductive/juvenile data are absent; formulation transfer and duplicate zinc/vitamin E exposure matter.

Clinical practicality7.5/10

Once-daily neutral tablets, quarter scoring and permission to split, crush or dissolve are workable at home; six cells, fractional-weight gaps and up to three tablets daily still require deliberate selection and adherence.
