vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

OPYGARD 2%

cutaneous powder, 40 g for dogs
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Complete authorised dog role: treatment of flea, sucking-lice, tick and biting-lice infestation, with claimed 2-3-week reinfestation protection, but a quantitative dose only for 10-15 kg dogs · On the skin
Care settingVeterinarian-selected whole-body dust treatment at home only for a dog within the quantitative 10-15 kg label band, with PPE, inhalation/licking control, environmental management and reassessment before repetition
vetman score 4.4/10 Weak evidence support
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 148-11 · Verified on 23 Oct 2026

A traceable authorised dog powder with a named parasite spectrum, but no exact controlled outcomes, conflicting old carbaryl-powder evidence and a dose usable only at 10-15 kg. Cholinergic dust exposure and adverse US/Australian regulatory decisions make it a weak, narrow option rather than a routine modern ectoparasite programme.

Regulatory and scientific credibility6.0/10

Exact identity, composition and restrictions are transparent under current Georgian and Bulgarian/EU national authorisations, but the public SPC dates from 2017, no exact outcome dossier is public and it omits a dose outside 10-15 kg. EPA cancelled carbaryl pet uses except collars and APVMA cancelled home-veterinary dusts after finding insufficient risk data.

Clinical efficacy4.0/10

Carbaryl is mechanistically active and an old different 5% powder report found ectoparasite activity, but exact OPYGARD 2% has no public controlled trial. An old field report found carbaryl powders ineffective against brown dog ticks, and the exact 2-3-week reinfestation claim lacks a public comparative or durability dataset.

Safety and tolerability4.0/10

The exact SPC states no known adverse reactions and gives PPE, reproduction, interaction and overdose boundaries, but carbaryl is a cholinesterase inhibitor with inhalation, ingestion, dermal and household exposure potential. Adverse-event frequency is unquantified, overdose may be severe and independent US/Australian regulators rejected pet dust uses on risk/data grounds.

Clinical practicality3.0/10

Three-week dosing is infrequent, but whole-body dusting while preventing inhalation, eye exposure, licking and household contamination is burdensome. The 15-30 g twofold range applies only to 10-15 kg dogs, gives no responsible dose outside that band and creates variable exposure and pack waste even within one 40 g pack.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Current Georgian price for the exact 40 g presentation and repeat-treatment cost were unavailable; price is excluded from the denominator.

Important safety and use flags

  • Hard dose boundary: the exact label gives 15-30 g only for a 10-15 kg dog. Do not convert this to a g/kg rule or extrapolate below 10 kg or above 15 kg; choose a product with a valid weight-specific dose instead.
  • Shake first, dust the entire dog once and rub against the hair until powder reaches skin. Keep powder out of eyes, nose and mouth, prevent inhalation and licking, and stop if accurate full-coat application cannot be achieved safely.
  • The broad label names fleas, sucking lice, ticks and biting lice and claims 2-3 weeks against reinfestation. No public exact-product trial supports that duration, and old carbaryl-powder studies conflict; confirm the parasite and reassess response rather than assuming uniform coverage.
  • Carbaryl reversibly inhibits cholinesterase. Salivation, vomiting, miosis, visual change, sweating, tremor/fasciculation, muscle weakness, dyspnoea or seizures after excess exposure are an emergency; remove residual dust safely and obtain urgent veterinary toxicology care.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or lactation or with hypersensitivity. The label says no known adverse reactions, but gives no frequency denominator or broad post-market dataset; absence of listed events is not proof of negligible risk.
  • Do not use simultaneously with another insecticide. Review all flea/tick collars, spot-ons, sprays, shampoos, environmental products and drugs that can affect cholinesterase before treatment; carbaryl is also unstable in alkaline conditions.
  • Wear protective clothing, gloves and eye protection; do not eat, drink or smoke during application. Avoid breathing dust, wash exposed skin with soap and water and keep children and other animals away until loose powder has been removed.
  • Environmental application is limited by the exact label to corners/places inaccessible to people and pets. Do not dust bedding, food/water areas or general living surfaces indiscriminately; prevent aquatic/environmental contamination and follow local disposal rules.
  • Treating one dog does not control all off-host flea stages or every household animal. Use diagnosis-led treatment, clean/vacuum and wash bedding, assess all pets and choose a sustained preventive strategy when reinfestation risk continues.
  • Repeat only after three weeks when still indicated. Store below 25 C in the original dry light-protected container, mark first opening and discard after two months; verify exact OPYGARD 2% dog powder and do not substitute similarly named environmental/bird products.

Information not fully verified Shake before use. Dog 10-15 kg: apply 15-30 g once over the whole body and rub against the hair to reach skin; repeat after three weeks if needed. No quantitative dose is established for dogs outside 10-15 kg and the range must not be extrapolated. Environmental dusting is limited to corners/places inaccessible to people and pets and does not replace a comprehensive parasite-control plan.
