Ear drops · Cat Cat 4–5 drops
After otoscopy, cytology, cleaning and confirmation of an intact tympanum, soften/remove crusts and instil 4–5 drops into the affected external canal. Massage gently. Use 3–4 times daily initially, then 2–3 times daily after three days; usually 5–7 days and never more than 12 days. The exact label restricts use to serious infection supported by pathogen diagnosis, susceptibility and resistance to common antibiotics. Recheck clinical and cytological response; stop for pain, hearing or vestibular change.

vetman score 6.0/10 Situational / acceptable
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A transparent authorised option for a narrow, diagnosed susceptible canine otitis role, but not an empirical all-purpose ear drop: intact tympanum, susceptibility, primary-cause treatment and demanding frequent dosing determine value.

Regulatory and scientific credibility7.5/10

The exact dog/cat formulation, dose, strict indication restriction and 12-day open life are transparent, with current Georgian and Czech/EU authorisation. The regulator document is old and no independent exact-product trial or broad pharmacovigilance record was identified.

Clinical efficacy6.0/10

Gentamicin, anti-inflammatory triamcinolone, salicylic acid and cationic antiseptic are mechanistically coherent for selected susceptible otitis. Historical isolates showed 90% overall and 85% Pseudomonas gentamicin susceptibility, not universal coverage; no exact-product trial and no conventional dedicated antifungal limit confidence.

Safety and tolerability5.5/10

An intact tympanum materially reduces risk, and the exact label reports no known adverse effects, but topical gentamicin remains potentially ototoxic. Steroid masking/immunosuppression, irritation from salicylic acid/ethanol/antiseptic, low systemic antibiotic exposure and a painful diseased canal require active monitoring.

Clinical practicality4.5/10

Four to five drops three to four times daily, then two to three times daily, plus cleaning/massage for up to 12 days is measurable but demanding for home adherence. Pain, canal stenosis, resistant infection and frequent handling may make treatment unreliable without demonstration and early recheck.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Current Georgian full-course price and presentation-specific wastage cost were unavailable; price is excluded from the denominator.

Important safety and use flags

  • Hard stop: confirm an intact tympanic membrane before use. Do not use with rupture or when middle-ear exposure cannot be responsibly excluded. Gentamicin may be ototoxic, especially beyond an abnormal tympanum.
  • Obtain cytology before cleaning and diagnose the primary cause. The exact label restricts use to serious infection supported by pathogen identification, susceptibility to the active and resistance to common antibiotics; do not use as an empirical all-purpose ear drop.
  • Dose is 4–5 drops into the affected external canal 3–4 times daily initially, then 2–3 times daily after three days; massage gently. Usual duration is 5–7 days and the absolute label maximum is 12 days.
  • Recheck clinically and cytologically. Stop and urgently assess new hearing loss, head tilt, nystagmus, ataxia, vertigo, facial-nerve change, marked pain or worsening discharge; investigate otitis media rather than continuing blindly.
  • Gentamicin susceptibility is not universal and historical Pseudomonas coverage was about 85%. Culture/susceptibility is especially important for rods, severe/recurrent disease, prior antimicrobial exposure or poor response; minimise resistance selection.
  • No conventional dedicated antifungal or acaricide is present. Treat confirmed yeast/fungal disease and Otodectes with an appropriate effective plan; in-vitro gentamicin inhibition of Malassezia is not clinical antifungal equivalence.
  • Triamcinolone can reduce inflammation and pain but can mask progression, delay healing, promote secondary infection and cause local/systemic glucocorticoid effects. Do not extend beyond 12 days or repeat courses without re-diagnosis.
  • Salicylic acid, ethanol and carbethopendecinium can irritate an eroded inflamed canal. Do not add another cleaner or drop unless compatibility, spacing and tympanic safety are established; avoid traumatic cleaning.
  • Low systemic antibiotic concentrations can occur after routine topical otic treatment. Consider total aminoglycoside exposure, renal/neuromuscular vulnerability and concurrent ototoxic drugs when the canal is severely inflamed or treatment is repeated.
  • Shake to redisperse permitted slight sediment, avoid dropper contact/cross-ear contamination, label first opening, store below 25 °C protected from light and discard after 12 days. Wear gloves, wash hands and avoid eye/skin/mucosal contact or ingestion.

Authorised for cats, but direct feline outcomes are absent and the high-frequency gentamicin/steroid regimen has important diagnostic, ototoxicity, spectrum and handling constraints; reserve for well-supported susceptible cases.

Clinical efficacy5.0/10

The exact label includes cats and mixed-species susceptibility data support possible activity, but no independent feline Otibiovin outcome study was identified. Feline causes differ, gentamicin coverage is incomplete and the formula lacks a conventional dedicated antifungal.

Safety and tolerability5.5/10

An intact tympanum materially reduces risk, and the exact label reports no known adverse effects, but topical gentamicin remains potentially ototoxic. Steroid masking/immunosuppression, irritation from salicylic acid/ethanol/antiseptic, low systemic antibiotic exposure and a painful diseased canal require active monitoring.

Clinical practicality4.0/10

The same high-frequency schedule is particularly burdensome in many cats and can increase restraint stress, missed doses and dropper contamination. Feline-friendly handling, pain control, demonstration and an early recheck are central to feasibility.
