Otopet

23/15/1.2 mg/g ear drops, 130 g for dogs
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Full dog label: cleansing and adjunctive care of external otitis with an astringent antiseptic, local anaesthetic and niaouli oil, plus preventive ear cleaning · auricular
Care settingOwner ear care after veterinary otoscopy and cytology, within a diagnosed otitis plan
vetman score 5.6/10 Weak evidence support
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 18-11 · Verified on 21 Oct 2026

A weak adjunct: an EU-authorised ear cleanser with antiseptic and anaesthetic action but no published efficacy data. It does not replace diagnosis and cytology-guided treatment of otitis.

Regulatory and scientific credibility6.0/10

Otopet (Fatro, Italy) holds an EU national authorisation listed in the Union Product Database and is registered in Georgia (18-11, no expiry); the assessment file is not public, and the Georgian register shows a unit error (1.2 g/g niaouli oil) that the EU information gives as 1.2 mg/g.

Clinical efficacy4.0/10

Zinc phenolsulfonate is an astringent antiseptic and lidocaine eases ear pain, but no published clinical trial supports the product, and guidelines treat otitis with cytology-guided topical therapy and control of the primary cause.

Safety and tolerability6.5/10

The current EU information lists no contraindication or adverse event and permits use in pregnancy and lactation; middle-ear safety of lidocaine and the essential oil is not established, so the eardrum should be checked first.

Clinical practicality6.0/10

Filling the canal twice daily, tapering to once daily and then every 2-3 days, with weekly preventive cleaning, works at home, but repeated filling of a painful ear is demanding.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

No verified current Georgian price or patient-adjusted course cost was found; foreign prices were not substituted.

Important safety and use flags

  • Check the eardrum by otoscopy before use; do not instil into an ear with a ruptured tympanic membrane, as middle-ear safety is not established.
  • This is not an antibacterial or antifungal treatment: take ear cytology and add a targeted otic product when bacteria or yeast are present.
  • Control the primary cause (allergy, parasites, foreign body) or the otitis will recur.
  • Stop and recheck if head tilt, loss of balance, increasing pain or worsening discharge appear.
  • Dog-only product; niaouli is a Melaleuca essential oil, so keep it away from cats.
