Exact broad label dose for bitches: 2–10 IU = 0.4–2 ml IM or SC; repeated small doses are preferred to one large dose. For confirmed uterine inertia, current MSD guidance is narrower: 2–5 IU every 20–30 minutes, no more than three ineffective doses and 5 IU upper limit. vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Assessed clinical scopeDog · Label-authorised canine reproductive adjunct for carefully selected uterine inertia/parturition support, postpartum uterine involution or retained placenta, and impaired milk let-down · IM,SC
Care settingVeterinary obstetric/postpartum setting with imaging and fetal/maternal assessment, repeated-dose documentation and immediate Caesarean capability when used for dystocia
vetman score 6.9/10 Situational / acceptable
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

An established and authorised canine reproductive tool that can be valuable in confirmed non-obstructive uterine inertia and selected postpartum/milk-let-down roles; diagnosis, low dosing and early surgical escalation determine its benefit-risk.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.0/10

The exact 5 IU/ml, 50 ml presentation has current Georgian registration and a current Czech/EU authorisation with transparent dog target, routes, doses, contraindications and storage. Exact-product independent outcomes remain absent.

Clinical efficacy7.0/10

Established physiology, exact authorisation, a randomized 27-bitch study and large clinical series support a real role in selected uterine inertia. Outcomes depend heavily on diagnosis and timely surgery; broad postpartum and milk-let-down claims have less direct canine evidence.

Safety and tolerability5.5/10

Correct low-dose use is familiar, but the consequence of treating obstruction or escalating blindly is severe: fetal compromise/death, tonic or incoordinate contractions and uterine rupture. Large series associate oxytocin-treated cases with poorer puppy survival, although confounding is substantial.

Clinical practicality7.0/10

IM/SC delivery and a 5 IU/ml concentration are simple in a prepared obstetric setting. The real burden is not injection but imaging, fetal-heart and maternal assessment, timed reassessment, exact repeat-dose records and prompt surgical escalation.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Current Georgian full-course price and presentation-specific wastage cost were unavailable; price is excluded from the denominator.

Important safety and use flags

  • Absolute gate: do not use in obstructive dystocia, fetal oversize or malposition, uterine torsion, incompletely dilated cervix, uterine hypertonus or closed-cervix pyometra. Oxytocin against an obstruction can kill fetuses or rupture the uterus.
  • Before dystocia use, document fetal number/size/position and heart rates, cervical and birth-canal patency, uterine inertia, dam status and elapsed stage; check calcium/glucose when indicated. Have immediate Caesarean capability and a defined intervention threshold.
  • Exact broad IM/SC label range is 2–10 IU (0.4–2 ml), but current confirmed-uterine-inertia guidance uses 2–5 IU every 20–30 minutes, no more than three ineffective doses and a 5 IU upper limit. Do not automatically escalate to 10 IU.
  • Excessive, rapid or poorly selected exposure can cause premature placental separation, fetal hypoxia/death, hypercontractile, incoordinate or tetanic labour and uterine rupture. High concentration may create tonic rather than rhythmic contractions.
  • No meaningful response after a low initial dose and reassessment is not an instruction to keep dosing. Current guidance permits no more than three ineffective uterine-inertia doses; worsening fetal heart rate, obstruction, maternal compromise or failed progress requires surgery.
  • Record every dose, route, time, contraction response, fetal heart reassessment and delivered fetus. Prefer repeated small doses to one large dose, but only while the diagnosis and fetal status still justify medical management.
  • Beta-adrenergic agonists and catecholamine/stress can reduce uterine or mammary response; prostaglandin F2α may potentiate uterine effects. Reconcile all reproductive and cardiovascular drugs and never overcome an interaction with blind dose escalation.
  • Use during pregnancy only when intentionally promoting parturition after full assessment. Pregnant or lactating staff should avoid handling; prevent self-injection, and seek urgent medical advice after exposure because human uterine contraction may occur.
  • The exact product targets bitches, not cats. Do not transfer the authorised UK Oxytocin-S feline indication or dose to Oxytocin bio. Postpartum involution, retained placenta and milk-let-down roles also require cause-specific diagnosis and recheck.
  • Use aseptic technique. Refrigerate at 2–8 °C, protect from freezing, label first opening and discard after 28 days. Do not use an expired, frozen, contaminated or visibly abnormal solution; track the 50 ml multidose vial across patients.

vetman score 6.0/10 Situational / acceptable
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Yes, veterinary · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A traceable authorised rapid route for selected canine reproductive roles, but direct IV outcomes are absent and tiny-volume dilution plus severe selection/dose consequences make it a low-confidence hospital-only option.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.0/10

The exact 5 IU/ml, 50 ml presentation has current Georgian registration and a current Czech/EU authorisation with transparent dog target, routes, doses, contraindications and storage. Exact-product independent outcomes remain absent.

Clinical efficacy6.0/10

Oxytocin has established rapid uterotonic and milk-ejection pharmacology and the exact route is authorised, but direct canine IV outcome studies for the product’s broad roles were not identified. Evidence mainly addresses oxytocin generally and selected dystocia management.

Safety and tolerability4.5/10

Rapid exposure and a 0.1 ml dose make dilution or route error less forgiving. Hypercontraction, premature placental separation, fetal hypoxia/death, incoordinate labour and uterine rupture can follow wrong selection, dose or speed; direct IV safety data are sparse.

Clinical practicality5.0/10

The exact 0.1 ml dose requires a small-volume syringe, independent check, dilution in a larger volume and slow IV access while emergency surgery remains available. It is feasible in hospital but operationally error-sensitive.

  • Excessive, rapid or poorly selected exposure can cause premature placental separation, fetal hypoxia/death, hypercontractile, incoordinate or tetanic labour and uterine rupture. High concentration may create tonic rather than rhythmic contractions.

  • Use only in an emergency-capable veterinary setting with secure venous access, precise dilution, slow administration and continuous maternal/fetal observation. Record concentration, calculated IU, volume, diluent, route and exact time.
  • Beta-adrenergic agonists and catecholamine/stress can reduce uterine or mammary response; prostaglandin F2α may potentiate uterine effects. Reconcile all reproductive and cardiovascular drugs and never overcome an interaction with blind dose escalation.
