vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Telazol

tiletamine 250 mg + zolazepam 250 mg, powder for solution for injection for dogs and cats
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Label-concordant IM immobilisation/brief anaesthesia or IV induction before inhalant maintenance in dogs · IM,IV
Care settingFully equipped veterinary anaesthesia setting with pre-anaesthetic assessment, oxygen, airway and ventilation support, continuous physiologic monitoring, rescue analgesia and staffed recovery.
vetman score 7.5/10 Good
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A well-supported exact US/Georgian product for canine IM immobilisation and IV induction; reliable utility is offset by cardiopulmonary monitoring needs and potentially prolonged or rough recovery.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.5/10

Exact Telazol has current Georgian and FDA veterinary authorisations with NADA label and FOI support; exact EU/GB negatives are documented with Zoletil positive controls, so no sibling authorisation is transferred.

Clinical efficacy8.5/10

Rapid, reliable immobilisation and induction are supported by exact labels, FDA review for canine IV induction and direct physiologic/induction studies. The role is strongest for brief procedures or transition to inhalant maintenance, not prolonged stand-alone anaesthesia.

Safety and tolerability5.5/10

Respiratory depression, transient hypoxaemia/acidosis, sympathetic cardiovascular effects, salivation, emergence reactions and prolonged recovery are clinically important; canine zolazepam may clear before tiletamine and worsen recovery quality.

Clinical practicality7.5/10

A compact reconstituted 100 mg/ml solution supports IM immobilisation and titrated IV induction, but preparation, controlled access, exact slow IV titration, airway readiness and prolonged monitored recovery add burden.

Important safety and use flags

  • Use only in a fully equipped anaesthesia setting. Pre-oxygenate when indicated; have a patent airway, oxygen, ventilation, suction, emergency drugs and trained continuous monitoring available before injection.
  • Immobility is not complete analgesia. Add procedure-appropriate multimodal analgesia for painful interventions and use an inhalant or other maintenance plan when duration or surgical stimulus exceeds the product’s brief role.
  • Respiratory depression, hypoxaemia, hypercapnia and apneustic breathing can occur, especially after IV or higher doses. Monitor SpO2 and ventilation, use capnography when possible, and be ready to intubate and ventilate.
  • Heart rate and blood pressure may rise through sympathetic stimulation, yet hypotension or arrhythmia can occur in compromised patients or combinations. Avoid assuming preserved blood pressure means adequate ventilation or perfusion.
  • Dogs may recover slowly or dysphorically because zolazepam is eliminated before tiletamine. Recover in a quiet, dark, padded area with continuous observation until protective reflexes, temperature and coordinated ambulation are adequate.
  • Avoid or apply a stringent benefit-risk assessment in severe cardiac, respiratory, renal, hepatic or pancreatic disease, shock, head trauma, raised intracranial pressure, seizure disorders or penetrating ocular injury.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or caesarean section unless an exact current label explicitly permits it and the neonatal risk is justified. Reproductive and very young-animal safety is limited.
  • Reconstitute only as the exact label directs and calculate in total combined mg/kg. Telazol uses 5 ml diluent; follow the current FDA label for asepsis, in-use storage and discard timing.
  • Titrate IV administration to effect and respect route-, indication- and species-specific maximums. Do not combine the IM and IV tables or redose automatically.
  • Review the entire premedication and anaesthetic plan. Alpha-2 agonists, opioids, phenothiazines, inhalants and other depressants can materially change cardiovascular, respiratory, analgesic and recovery effects; use only a deliberately balanced protocol.

vetman score 7.0/10 Good
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A useful exact IM feline anaesthetic for selected healthy cats and brief procedures, with narrower route flexibility and meaningful respiratory, pulmonary-oedema and recovery limitations.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.5/10

Exact Telazol has current Georgian and FDA veterinary authorisations with NADA label and FOI support; exact EU/GB negatives are documented with Zoletil positive controls, so no sibling authorisation is transferred.

Clinical efficacy7.5/10

Exact labels and feline clinical studies support rapid immobilisation and short anaesthesia. Evidence is older and heterogeneous and does not justify treating dissociative immobility as complete analgesia for every painful procedure.

Safety and tolerability5.0/10

Respiratory depression or apneustic breathing, hypoxaemia, hypothermia, pulmonary oedema reports, salivation and prolonged recovery require close monitoring; organ disease and high-risk patients materially narrow the safety margin.

Clinical practicality7.0/10

Small-volume IM administration is useful when venous access is difficult, but cats have no labelled IV route, doses vary by procedure, and reconstitution, controlled access, airway readiness and prolonged monitored recovery add burden.

  • Cats may show prolonged recovery, hypothermia, salivation, vocalisation or excitation; pulmonary oedema has been reported. Monitor temperature, respiration and oxygenation through the full recovery period.
  • Avoid or apply a stringent benefit-risk assessment in severe cardiac, respiratory, renal, hepatic or pancreatic disease, shock, head trauma, raised intracranial pressure, seizure disorders or penetrating ocular injury.

  • Telazol cats are labelled for IM use only. Do not transfer Zoletil’s feline IV regimen merely because the final concentration is the same.
  • Review the entire premedication and anaesthetic plan. Alpha-2 agonists, opioids, phenothiazines, inhalants and other depressants can materially change cardiovascular, respiratory, analgesic and recovery effects; use only a deliberately balanced protocol.

  • Critical
Do not use in animals with severe heart disease.
  • Critical
Do not use in animals with severe respiratory disease.
  • Critical
Do not use in animals with renal insufficiency.
  • Critical
Do not use in animals with hepatic insufficiency.
  • Critical
Do not use in severe hypertension.
  • Critical
Do not use in pregnant bitches and queens or for caesarean section: it crosses the placenta and can cause fatal respiratory depression in newborns.

  • Warning
Safety in lactation has not been established; use only after a benefit-risk assessment.
  • Caution
Do not use in severe hypertension, head trauma or intracranial tumours, pancreatic insufficiency, for caesarean section, or in rabbits. Do not give chloramphenicol before or during the anaesthetic; acepromazine premedication deepens cardiorespiratory depression and hypothermia; reduce the dose with other premedicants. Eyes stay open (protect the cornea); reflexes are kept; keep warm; redosing prolongs and worsens recovery. Overdose signs from 20 mg/kg; no antidote (doxapram may help).
  • Caution
Not recommended in very young animals: the solvent contains benzyl alcohol.
