Active substance

Acetylsalicylic acid

Salicylate NSAID. Used in veterinary practice (dog, cat); overdose thresholds from published sources, not treatment doses.

Safety

Overdose

Used in veterinary practice at veterinary doses; human tablets and gels are much stronger and cannot be dosed accurately for an animal. The table shows where harm has been described after a single ingestion, mg per kg of body weight: overdose thresholds, not treatment doses.

Common cat toxicities
Cornell University, Department of Animal Science, 2018
80-120 mg/kg over 10-12 days toxic

Dog

Signs: Vomiting (may contain blood), stomach ulcers, fast deep breathing, acid-base disturbance, raised temperature, bleeding tendency, seizures, coma.

Aspirin is used in dogs only at low doses set by a veterinarian (for example against blood clots); human tablets are often stronger than a dose for a dog. Repeated doses damage the stomach at moderate amounts (25 mg/kg three times a day caused erosions in half of dogs within 2 days); 100-300 mg/kg a day for 1-4 weeks causes poisoning.

Cat

Signs: Depression, anorexia, vomiting (may contain blood), raised temperature, fast breathing, acid-base disturbance, anaemia, ataxia.

Aspirin is used in cats only at very low doses spaced days apart, prescribed by a veterinarian (for example against blood clots). Cats eliminate it very slowly (half-life about 37.5 hours), so dosing it like a human medicine makes it accumulate: 325 mg twice daily has killed cats, and 80-120 mg/kg over 10-12 days causes poisoning. Human tablets are too strong to dose accurately for a cat. No single-dose threshold is established.

Safety information

Known Contraindications

  • Warning (Cat)
Cats eliminate aspirin very slowly (half-life about 37.5 hours) because they glucuronidate it poorly. Use it only at a low dose set by a veterinarian, with days between doses; given daily like a human medicine it accumulates and can be fatal.
