vetman score
7.3/10
Good
Evidence confidence: High
Georgia: No · Verified on 15 Oct 2026
A well-documented licensed option for a narrow, proved focal mixed bacterial-and-Malassezia dermatitis. Its value disappears when used empirically, on diffuse/deep disease, or where an antiseptic or narrower agent is suitable.
Regulatory and scientific credibility8.0/10
Current exact UK and EU regulator records provide full composition, authorisation, dose, target-animal PK and safety, while the exact EU public assessment report exposes the pivotal efficacy review; national EU authorisations are traceable, but Georgia and the US have no exact authorisation and no independent published exact-product trial was located.
Clinical efficacy7.5/10
The regulator-reviewed exact-product GCP field trial included 56 eligible dogs, confirmed mixed infections, an active comparator and demonstrated non-inferiority with clinical cure by day 14. This supports efficacy within the narrow proved mixed-infection scope, while antiseptic-first guidance, category-B fluoroquinolone stewardship and the absence of an independent published trial limit broader value.
Safety and tolerability6.5/10
Very rare mild erythema, very low one-zone plasma exposure and a five-times one-zone tolerance study are reassuring, but multi-zone overdose was not studied and steroid-related delayed healing, epidermal thinning/adrenal suppression, reproductive risk, licking and handler inhalation/contact risks remain material.
Clinical practicality7.0/10
A metered spray is practical for focal painful or folded skin and the twice-daily 7-day plan is clear, but clipping/cleaning, 25 cm² measurement, four-zone ceiling, gloves, ventilation, lick prevention, no bathing and 20-minute child/contact restriction add substantial workflow.
Full-course cost-effectiveness-
No verified current Georgian patient-adjusted full-course price is available, so cost is excluded.
Important safety and use flags
- Veterinary prescription medicine authorised for dogs in GB and EU national markets. Exact-product registers dated 2026-10-15 record it as not authorised in Georgia and the US; this does not negate the GB/EU dossier.
- Use only when cytology and organism identification show a focal mixed infection: susceptible Pseudomonas or Staphylococcus plus susceptible Malassezia. Do not use for empiric, bacterial-only, yeast-only, diffuse, deep, sterile or noninfectious disease.
- Marbofloxacin is an EMA category B Restrict fluoroquinolone. Prefer a suitable antiseptic or narrower option; use culture/susceptibility, avoid quinolone-resistant isolates and stop unnecessary components as soon as the mixed indication no longer exists.
- Clean, clip and remove exudate/debris before dosing. Treat two sprays per 25 cm² twice daily; split larger lesions into measured zones and never exceed four zones simultaneously.
- Treat seven days and reassess. Continue only if still indicated, never beyond 14 days; persistent infection after day 14 requires diagnosis and a different appropriate product, not automatic extension.
- Avoid eyes, mucosa, open lesions and wounds. Prevent self- and cross-licking, separate treated dogs when needed, keep hair short and do not bathe or shampoo during administration.
- Not recommended in pregnancy or lactation; safety is unestablished and ketoconazole was teratogenic/embryotoxic in laboratory animals. Avoid known hypersensitivity to any active or excipient.
- Prolonged or intensive topical prednisolone can thin epidermis, delay healing and suppress adrenal function. Monitor erythema, irritation, delayed repair and systemic glucocorticoid signs, especially with multiple zones or comorbidity.
- Avoid concurrent low-pH products because they may inhibit marbofloxacin. No interaction studies establish combined-product safety or efficacy; review every topical/systemic antimicrobial, antifungal and corticosteroid.
- Handler safety: wear single-use impermeable gloves, spray outdoors or with good ventilation, avoid inhalation/skin/eye contact and flames, and do not let children touch the dog until dry for at least 20 minutes. Pregnant people or those trying to conceive must not administer it.
