Species and toxic dose

SpeciesRiskToxic dose
Dog Toxic Not established in the open sources
Cat Toxic Not established in the open sources

Toxic principle

The yeast keeps fermenting in the warm stomach: carbon dioxide distends the stomach, and the ethanol it produces is absorbed.

Onset

Variable; it can take hours, unlike a drink.

Clinical signs

Painful bloated abdomen, possible gastric dilatation-volvulus, and the signs of ethanol poisoning.

Organs affected

Stomach, central nervous system.

Treatment principle (for veterinarians)

Emesis often works (the dough may come up in one lump) and speeds recovery; then as for ethanol poisoning.

A summary of the principles in the sources, not a protocol: doses and the plan are the treating veterinarian's decision.
