vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.
DogIV human albumin for severe or worsening hypoalbuminaemia with clinically important oedema, effusion or oncotic failure when species-specific albumin is unavailable and ICU risk-benefit assessment favours xenoprotein exposure

CatIV human albumin for severe or worsening hypoalbuminaemia with clinically important oedema, effusion or oncotic failure when species-specific albumin is unavailable and ICU risk-benefit assessment favours xenoprotein exposure
Albumin (human): No dose supported by a publicly verifiable source yet
Known Contraindications
Critical
Repeat administration carries a separate and greater risk; always establish whether the patient has received human albumin previously. In a study of 9 healthy dogs given 25% human albumin, all 9 developed antibodies and 8 had a positive intradermal test. One dog had an anaphylactoid reaction during the first infusion; both of the 2 dogs that received a second infusion reacted. The first exposure can sensitize the patient.
Critical
A reaction may be delayed, so an uneventful infusion does not establish safety. In a study of 6 healthy dogs, all 6 developed delayed reactions between days 5 and 13, including lethargy, lameness, oedema, cutaneous vasculitis, vomiting, and anorexia; 2 died despite treatment. Warn the owner about signs to watch for at home and monitor the patient weekly for at least 1 month. In a series of 73 critically ill dogs, 23% had at least one complication during or immediately after infusion and 4% had a severe delayed complication.
Critical
Do not dilute with sterile water for injection as this may cause hemolysis in recipients. Do not add supplementary medication.

Warning
Use with caution in conditions where hypervolemia and its consequences or hemodilution could represent a special risk to the patient.

Warning
Use cautiously in renal disease. Volume loading and haemodilution are both risks, and delayed type III hypersensitivity associated with acute kidney injury has been reported in 2 dogs. Monitor urine output during infusion and creatinine during the following weeks.
