vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

CANVAC DHPL

lyophilisate and solvent for injection, 1 ml dose for dogs
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Complete dog label from 6 weeks: active immunisation against distemper, infectious hepatitis/laryngotracheitis, parvovirosis and leptospirosis caused by L. Icterohaemorrhagiae, Grippotyphosa and Hardjo/Sejroe · Subcutaneous
Care settingPreventive veterinary vaccination after clinical assessment, with documented age/risk schedule, cold chain, batch and emergency readiness
vetman score 7.1/10 Good
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 1-03/23 · Verified on 23 Oct 2026

A current authorised core-plus-trivalent-leptospira vaccine with a clear one-year label and generally favourable characterised safety. It is clinically useful when its exact serovar composition fits local risk, but public exact-product outcome evidence is limited, annual dosing remains, and the puppy series must be aligned to a final core dose at >=16 weeks.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.0/10

The exact composition, presentation, regimen and safety frequencies are transparent under current Georgian and valid Czech/EU national authorisations with a current regulator leaflet. A public exact-product assessment/outcome dossier and exact GB/US authorisation are absent.

Clinical efficacy6.0/10

Core CDV/CAV/CPV vaccine efficacy is strongly established and the exact label gives 2-3-week onset and at least one-year duration, but no public controlled exact-product outcome dossier was found. Leptospiral protection is serovar-related, the label lacks component-specific clinical endpoints and its Hardjo/Sejroe formulation with claimed Canicola cross-protection may not match modern local breadth needs.

Safety and tolerability7.5/10

Current exact pharmacovigilance wording, rare transient fever/anorexia/local swelling, very rare anaphylaxis and tenfold-overdose observation support a favourable profile in selected healthy dogs. Prior vaccine reactions, acute/febrile/organ disease, stress and late-pregnancy/postpartum exclusions remain important.

Clinical practicality7.0/10

One fixed 1 ml SC dose is efficient and adverse-event monitoring is routine, but the primary course needs two or often three visits and annual revaccination. Paired-vial aseptic reconstitution, immediate use, strict cold chain, post-vaccine rest and schedule adjustment to maternal antibody create continuing clinic workload.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Current Georgian full-course price was unavailable; price is excluded from the denominator.

Important safety and use flags

  • Complete scope: this active vaccine covers CDV, CAV-1/2, CPV and only the named leptospiral serovars. Do not promise sterile immunity, prevention of every respiratory syndrome or protection against every circulating Leptospira serogroup.
  • Primary schedule: give 1 ml SC from 6-8 weeks and repeat after 3 weeks. If maternal antibody is expected or dose two was before 12 weeks, add a third dose after 3-4 weeks and align the final core dose to current guidance at >=16 weeks or later when risk warrants.
  • Onset is 2-3 weeks after the completed primary course and labelled duration is at least one year. Protection is not immediate; manage exposure before onset and revaccinate annually under the exact label.
  • Leptospira boundary: antigens are Icterohaemorrhagiae, Grippotyphosa and Hardjo/Sejroe; the SPC claims cross-immunisation especially against Canicola. Compare local epidemiology and authorised broader options; do not infer Australis, Pomona or universal strain coverage.
  • Vaccinate clinically healthy dogs only. Defer during acute infection, fever, organ disease, major stress/heat/transport or inadequate health; vaccination does not treat incubating disease or replace sanitation and outbreak control.
  • Rare fever, anorexia and pea-sized, sometimes painful swelling may last up to 5 or 14 days respectively. Very rare hypersensitivity/anaphylaxis usually begins early and needs immediate treatment and adverse-event reporting.
  • Do not use after a prior unfavourable vaccine/allergic reaction. Early/mid-pregnancy and lactation are allowed, but do not use late in pregnancy or immediately postpartum; select timing after individual assessment.
  • Concurrent-use safety/efficacy is not established except when authorised CANVAC R is used as solvent. Decide other products before/after case by case and never mix with an unauthorised veterinary medicine.
  • Reconstitute the complete lyophilisate aseptically with the full 1 ml solvent, shake and inject immediately SC. Maintain 2-8 C storage, protect from frost/light/moisture, verify vial/lot/expiry and reject a damaged closure.
  • Keep adults rested for about 2-3 days and puppies about one week as labelled. Record product, batch, route, date, component-specific next due date and any reaction; accidental human self-injection requires prompt medical advice with the label.
