vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

EX-5

20 mg/ml oral suspension, 2 ml for dogs and cats
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Full dog label: oestrus postponement and interruption in bitches and a short course for male dogs with megestrol acetate 20 mg/ml oral suspension dosed per kg · By mouth
Care settingVeterinary prescription for a healthy, sexually mature dog after excluding pregnancy and reproductive and mammary disease, with exact cycle timing and follow-up checks
vetman score 4.8/10 Weak evidence support
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 001155 · Verified on 21 Oct 2026

A weak option: effective short-term oestrus control in a small bottle that does not suit larger dogs, with the usual uterine, mammary and endocrine risks. Prefer surgical neutering for long-term control.

Regulatory and scientific credibility4.5/10

The exact product is registered in Georgia (001155, valid to 2031) with a current Russian manufacturer instruction, but it has no EU, UK or US authorisation documented in the reviewed evidence or public dossier.

Clinical efficacy6.5/10

Megestrol acetate is an established way to postpone or interrupt oestrus in bitches, but timing is critical and no study of this product exists.

Safety and tolerability3.5/10

Progestogens can cause cystic endometrial hyperplasia and pyometra, mammary nodules, insulin resistance and acromegaly in dogs; short labelled courses lower these risks but do not remove them.

Clinical practicality4.5/10

Doses of 0.025-0.1 ml/kg are easy to calculate, but one 2 ml bottle holds only 40 mg, so a full interruption course for a 20 kg bitch needs about seven bottles.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

No verified current Georgian price or patient-adjusted course cost was found; foreign prices were not substituted.

Important safety and use flags

  • Do not use in pregnancy or lactation, before sexual maturity, at the first oestrus, or with reproductive disease, mammary tumours or diabetes.
  • Watch for vaginal discharge, lethargy, thirst or abdominal swelling after a course; pyometra can develop weeks later.
  • Give no more than two interruption courses a year, and no more than 32 days of postponement dosing.
  • The calculator shows the full starting dose; the follow-up dose is half of it.
  • Count the 2 ml bottles a full course needs before starting it.

Assessed clinical scopeCat · Full cat label: oestrus prevention and interruption in queens and suppression of sexual activity in tomcats with megestrol acetate 20 mg/ml oral suspension · By mouth
Care settingVeterinary prescription for a healthy, sexually mature cat after excluding pregnancy, reproductive and mammary disease and diabetes, with a measuring syringe and follow-up checks
vetman score 4.6/10 Weak evidence support
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 001155 · Verified on 21 Oct 2026

A weak option: megestrol in a liquid that is harder to dose accurately than a tablet, with the same diabetes, mammary and pyometra risks in cats. Prefer surgical neutering for lasting control.

Regulatory and scientific credibility4.5/10

The exact product is registered in Georgia (001155, valid to 2031) with a current Russian manufacturer instruction, but it has no EU, UK or US authorisation documented in the reviewed evidence or public dossier.

Clinical efficacy6.0/10

Megestrol acetate is an established way to prevent or interrupt oestrus in queens and to damp male sexual behaviour, but no study of this product exists and control lasts only while dosing continues.

Safety and tolerability3.0/10

Cats are especially sensitive to progestogens: diabetes mellitus, adrenal suppression, mammary hyperplasia and tumours, pyometra and weight gain are documented, and the risk grows with dose and duration up to the labelled 18 months.

Clinical practicality5.0/10

Cat doses of 0.125-0.25 ml (2.5-5 mg) are tiny volumes of a concentrated suspension from a 2 ml dropper bottle, so accurate dosing needs a 1 ml oral syringe.

  • Check glucose and palpate the mammary glands before and during long courses; stop at the first sign of increased thirst, urination or mammary swelling.
  • Shake well and measure 0.125-0.25 ml with a 1 ml oral syringe; a dropper is imprecise at these volumes.
  • Interrupt oestrus no more than twice a year and do not exceed 18 months of continuous prevention.
  • Male cats on long or repeated courses can gain weight, change behaviour and develop mammary enlargement.
