Form Species Dose Frequency Georgia
Solution · Cat Cat No dose for this species
No cat dose: Loroben is a human mouth rinse with two substances. No label, consensus or clinical study gives a cat dose for this combination, no identical product has a cat label, and a combination is never dosed from its components. The human label says it must be spat out, not swallowed, which an animal cannot be asked to do. Published cat work on benzydamine covers liver enzymes and toxicology, not treatment. In people it is used for gingivitis, stomatitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, aphthous lesions and mucositis, and to prevent plaque. Excipients (from the same maker's Kloroben SPC; Loroben's own leaflet not seen): propylene glycol and sorbitol 70 %, about 10 % each, peppermint essence and a cooling aroma of undisclosed composition; no ethanol or xylitol listed. Cats fed propylene glycol at 6-12 % of the diet formed Heinz bodies with shorter red-cell survival, and the US FDA bars it from cat food; those were repeated daily amounts, not a single lick. No dog or cat data on peppermint at this level.

Known Contraindications

  • Warning Benzydamine
Benzydamine is a human mouth and throat medicine; no dog or cat dose is established. Not for swallowing: in people, swallowing more than about 300 mg can cause vomiting, agitation and hallucinations, and one 4-year-old had convulsions. Treatment is symptomatic; there is no specific antidote.

  • Warning Benzydamine (Dog)
Dog: toxicology data only, not a treatment dose. By mouth, 30 mg/kg for 1 or 6 months caused no organ or blood changes; 45 mg/kg a day caused vomiting.
  • Warning Benzydamine (Cat)
Cat: no oral or systemic safety data found. The only report is 5 % cream on shaved skin for 2 weeks without intolerance. Benzydamine is a weak base and a weak prostaglandin inhibitor, unlike the acidic NSAIDs, but no study shows whether the usual feline NSAID caution applies, so do not assume swallowing it is safe.
    Sources: PubMed
  • Critical Chlorhexidine
Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substances or to any of the excipients. Exceptionally in dogs with atopy or cats with allergic skin disease.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Warning Chlorhexidine
Ototoxic: do not put into an ear when the eardrum is ruptured or has not been checked. Vestibular dysfunction was reported in 12 dogs and 3 cats after a chlorhexidine/cetrimide product. Keep out of the eyes unless the product is made for the eye: high concentrations cause keratitis and corneal ulceration. Hypersensitivity reactions occur on mucous membranes and damaged skin.
  • Warning Chlorhexidine (Cat)
Cat: in experiments chlorhexidine injured the middle-ear lining and inner-ear sensory cells even at 0.05 %. No published study covers oral use in cats, so safety in the cat's mouth is not established. One 1996 clinic report linked respiratory distress to chlorhexidine scrubs on endotracheal tubes: rinse thoroughly.
