vetman score 7.3/10 Good
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, human · № რ-046398 · Verified on 15 Oct 2026 Off-label use

A credible off-label transfer from a composition-matched authorised veterinary comparator for ocular pain and pupillary spasm, supported by canine pharmacodynamics; useful with ophthalmic diagnosis, monitoring and minimum necessary duration.

Regulatory and scientific credibility7.5/10

The exact human product is currently authorised in Georgia and Portugal with a transparent composition/leaflet; a current Portuguese veterinary comparator matches strength and preservative, but Cicloplegicedol itself has no veterinary authorisation and clinical transfer is not product equivalence.

Clinical efficacy7.5/10

The authorised matching-strength veterinary comparator supports relief of ciliary spasm/ocular pain and prevention of posterior synechiae in corneal ulcer and/or anterior uveitis, with species pharmacodynamics; controlled diseased-eye outcome trials for the exact human product were not located.

Safety and tolerability7.0/10

A small healthy-Beagle study found no significant IOP or tear-production change after one drop, but diseased eyes and repeated exposure remain less certain; ocular irritation, hypersensitivity, benzalkonium exposure and systemic antimuscarinic effects still require selection and monitoring.

Clinical practicality7.0/10

A calibrated dropper and once/twice-first-day then alternate-day comparator regimen are workable in ophthalmic care, but restraint, aseptic technique, ocular re-examination and spacing other drops remain necessary.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

A current Georgian exact-pack price and role-specific full-course/procedure cost were not verified; price is excluded from the denominator.

Important safety and use flags

  • Human medicine. All canine/feline use of this exact Cicloplegicedol presentation is off-label; the authorised Portuguese veterinary comparator supports transfer but does not make the exact product veterinary-authorised.
  • Healthy-Beagle one-drop data did not show a significant IOP/tear change, but diseased eyes and repeated exposure were not established; monitor patients with abnormal IOP or tear production.
  • Systemic absorption remains possible despite topical use. Use the minimum justified number of drops and monitor for salivation, vomiting, tremor, weakness, confusion or unusual behaviour.
  • Stop and reassess persistent/new ocular irritation, pain, chemosis, marked photophobia, keratitis or hypersensitivity. The exact product contains benzalkonium chloride 0.1 mg/ml, which may irritate the ocular surface.
  • Other antimuscarinic medicines may potentiate systemic effects. Cyclopentolate may antagonise cholinergic miotics/antiglaucoma medicines such as pilocarpine or carbachol; review the complete medication plan.
  • Separate other ophthalmic medicines by at least 5–10 minutes. Do not mix products in one preparation unless compatibility is established.
  • Avoid dropper-tip contact with the eye, lids or any surface; do not share one bottle between animals. Inspect solution clarity and bottle integrity before use.
  • Discard 28 days after first opening. Store at no more than 25°C, tightly closed in the original outer pack, protected from light and humidity.
  • Avoid during pregnancy unless the veterinarian concludes that expected benefit outweighs risk; use during lactation only after an individual benefit-risk assessment.
  • Overdose or ingestion can cause anticholinergic toxicity, including hypotension and respiratory/CNS depression. Treat as urgent exposure and contact veterinary toxicology/emergency care.

A useful intermediate-duration diagnostic cycloplegic/mydriatic with direct canine pharmacodynamic data and a transparent exact product; plan timing and do not mistake prolonged dilation for proof of refractive accuracy in every patient.

Clinical efficacy7.0/10

A direct 15-Beagle study confirms one-drop mydriasis beginning at 30 minutes and lasting up to 72 hours, while the exact human leaflet supports cycloplegic refraction; refractive-accuracy and diseased-eye data for this exact product remain limited.

Safety and tolerability7.5/10

A small healthy-Beagle study found no significant IOP or tear-production change after one drop, but diseased eyes and repeated exposure remain less certain; ocular irritation, hypersensitivity, benzalkonium exposure and systemic antimuscarinic effects still require selection and monitoring.

Clinical practicality8.0/10

One-drop administration and predictable onset are practical for clinic diagnostics, although prolonged dilation and the absence of one validated universal veterinary refraction protocol require planned timing and counselling.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

A current Georgian exact-pack price and role-specific full-course/procedure cost were not verified; price is excluded from the denominator.

A regulator-supported but narrower feline option for ocular pain/pupillary spasm. Efficacy is plausible and labelled for the matched comparator, but elevated IOP, prolonged action and systemic absorption make patient selection and monitoring decisive.

Clinical efficacy7.0/10

The authorised matching-strength veterinary comparator supports relief of ciliary spasm/ocular pain and prevention of posterior synechiae in corneal ulcer and/or anterior uveitis, with species pharmacodynamics; controlled diseased-eye outcome trials for the exact human product were not located.

Safety and tolerability4.5/10

Cats have reproducible IOP elevation after one drop and need baseline/ongoing IOP monitoring; systemic absorption and prolonged effects are relevant, while frequent systemic signs in a small study followed a higher two-drop-bilateral protocol rather than the usual single therapeutic drop.

Clinical practicality6.5/10

The low drop count and alternate-day maintenance are workable, but feline restraint, pre-treatment and follow-up tonometry, minimum-exposure dosing, prolonged dilation and systemic observation add meaningful clinical burden.

  • Do not use in cats with elevated intraocular pressure. Measure IOP before use and monitor it during treatment; one-drop feline studies show a reproducible early IOP rise.
  • Use the minimum justified feline exposure. A small study using two drops 10 minutes apart in both eyes reported temporary systemic signs in 10/15 cats; do not generalise that frequency to one drop or automatically repeat bilateral dosing.

Cyclopentolate can produce diagnostic mydriasis/cycloplegia in cats, but prolonged effects, reproducible IOP elevation and systemic signs after repeated bilateral dosing make it a weak routine default; justify exposure and monitor.

Clinical efficacy6.5/10

One-drop and repeated-dose feline studies confirm strong, prolonged mydriasis and use for refraction, but cycloplegic adequacy is less fully quantified and duration is variable; the exact human product has no feline diagnostic trial.

Safety and tolerability4.0/10

Feline studies show IOP elevation and prolonged 24–60 hour dilation; a small two-drop-bilateral refraction study reported temporary GI/behavioural signs in 10/15 cats. That frequency cannot be assigned to one drop, but it makes automatic repeated bilateral dosing a substantial safety weakness.

Clinical practicality5.5/10

Clinic administration is simple, but tonometry, avoidance of reflex repeat bilateral dosing, prolonged 24–60 hour dilation and post-procedure observation materially reduce diagnostic practicality.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

A current Georgian exact-pack price and role-specific full-course/procedure cost were not verified; price is excluded from the denominator.
