Sex Barrier Male, Tablet

vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Sex Barrier Male

Sex Barrier 0.4/0.02 mg tablets, N10 for male cats and dogs
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Full male label: suppression of sexual activity in male dogs with mepregenol acetate 0.4 mg plus ethinylestradiol 0.02 mg tablets, dosed by weight band once daily for 3-5 days · By mouth
Care settingVeterinary prescription for a healthy, sexually mature male dog after excluding genital and urinary disease and diabetes
vetman score 3.6/10 Poor / unconvincing
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 000547 | 000548 · Verified on 21 Oct 2026

A poor choice: oestrogen-containing hormone tablets for male dogs with no independent evidence and a bone-marrow risk. Castration or an EU-authorised deslorelin implant is the better option.

Regulatory and scientific credibility3.5/10

The male formulation is registered in Georgia (000547/000548, valid to 2029) with a 2023 Russian-language instruction, but mepregenol acetate has no EU, UK or US veterinary authorisation documented in the reviewed evidence and no public dossier exists.

Clinical efficacy3.5/10

Only manufacturer material supports hormonal suppression of male sexual behaviour with this combination; no independent study exists, while castration reliably removes the behaviour.

Safety and tolerability2.5/10

Each tablet carries 0.02 mg ethinylestradiol and a 30 kg dog takes 4 or more tablets a day; oestrogens can cause dose-related, sometimes irreversible bone-marrow suppression in dogs, and no safety data for this product exist.

Clinical practicality5.5/10

A 3-5 day tablet course is easy to give, but above 30 kg the dose follows a stepped label rule and the effect lasts only while treatment continues.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

No verified current Georgian price or patient-adjusted course cost was found; foreign prices were not substituted.

Important safety and use flags

  • Oestrogen can suppress bone marrow in dogs: check a blood count if the dog becomes lethargic or pale, bruises or develops fever after a course.
  • Do not use before sexual maturity or with genital disease, diabetes or urolithiasis.
  • Male formulation only; above 30 kg give 4 tablets plus 1 for each further 10 kg, as the label states.
  • Each repeat course adds oestrogen exposure; avoid routine repetition.
  • Full reproductive function returns about 2-3 months after stopping.

Assessed: 23 Oct 2026The overall score uses 25/25/25/15/10 weights. An unassessed price is excluded and the remaining weights are proportionally renormalised.

Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 000547 | 000548 · Verified on 21 Oct 2026

A poor choice: hormonal suppression of tomcat behaviour with an unproven combination and real endocrine risk. Castration is the standard; in the EU a deslorelin implant is the authorised reversible alternative for male cats.

Safety and tolerability3.0/10

The male tablet contains 20 times more ethinylestradiol than the female one; progestogens in cats can cause diabetes and mammary enlargement and the oestrogen adds feminising effects, and the label excludes diabetes and urolithiasis.

Clinical practicality6.0/10

One tablet per cat is easy to give, but it must be repeated every 14 days for as long as control is wanted.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

No verified current Georgian price or patient-adjusted course cost was found; foreign prices were not substituted.

Important safety and use flags

  • Do not use before sexual maturity or with genital disease, diabetes or urolithiasis.
  • Male formulation only: never give it to a female; it contains 0.02 mg ethinylestradiol per tablet.
  • Check glucose and watch for thirst, weight gain, mammary enlargement or urinary signs on repeated courses.
  • The effect stops when treatment ends; full reproductive function returns in about 2-3 months.
  • Castration, or an EU-authorised deslorelin implant, gives longer and better documented control.
