NexGard

11 mg, afoxolaner 11.3 mg, chewable tablet for dogs 2-4 kg
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Full dog label: fleas, listed tick species, indirect reduction of Dipylidium caninum and Babesia canis transmission risk, use in a flea-allergy dermatitis strategy, demodicosis, sarcoptic mange and ear mites within the exact tablet weight band · By mouth
Care settingVeterinary-selected outpatient ectoparasite treatment after exact weighing, parasite confirmation or individual epidemiological risk assessment
vetman score 8.6/10 Very good
Evidence confidence: High Georgia: No · Verified on 15 Oct 2026

A highly effective, well documented monthly canine ectoparasiticide with unusually broad current mite and vector-risk label claims. Strong foreign authorisation does not change its absence from the Georgian register, and exact whole-tablet selection plus neurologic counselling remain important.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.5/10

The exact strength is supported by a current detailed 2026 VMD SPC and active EU, UK and US authorisations. Afoxolaner-only NexGard is explicitly not registered in the checked Georgian veterinary register, unlike NexGard Spectra or Combo.

Clinical efficacy9.2/10

A large year-long field comparison supports high monthly flea and tick control, while direct controlled or multicentre field studies support demodicosis, sarcoptic mange and ear-mite roles. Vector-risk reductions are indirect and parasites must feed, so transmission cannot be excluded.

Safety and tolerability8.0/10

Labelled adverse events are very rare and mostly mild, short and self-limiting, but vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, anorexia, pruritus and isoxazoline-associated convulsion, ataxia or tremor require counselling. Young or underweight puppies and breeding males need benefit-risk assessment.

Clinical practicality9.0/10

One palatable chewable each month, directly or with food, is operationally simple; pregnancy and lactation use is permitted. Accurate whole-tablet band selection is essential, tablets cannot be divided, and mite indications require diagnosis-specific follow-up rather than automatic monthly use.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Price was not assessed and is excluded from the overall score.

Important safety and use flags

  • Do not use with hypersensitivity to afoxolaner or an excipient. This product is labelled for dogs, not cats.
  • Below 8 weeks of age or 2 kg, use only after the responsible veterinarian documents a benefit-risk assessment. Use in pregnant or lactating dogs and breeding females is permitted; breeding males still require benefit-risk assessment.
  • Counsel for vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, anorexia, pruritus, convulsion, ataxia or muscle tremor. Labelled events are very rare and mostly mild, short and self-limiting, but marked or persistent signs require reassessment.
  • Fleas, ticks and mites must begin feeding, so parasite-borne transmission cannot be excluded. Confirm parasite or epidemiological risk, address infested household animals and avoid unnecessary use or underdosing that can select resistance.
  • For fleas and listed ticks, use at monthly intervals according to season, local epidemiology and lifestyle. The label gives indirect Dipylidium-risk reduction for 30 days and Babesia canis-risk reduction for 28 days; neither is a guarantee against infection.
  • For demodicosis, continue until two negative skin scrapings one month apart and address underlying disease; for sarcoptic mange, give two monthly doses and extend only by clinical assessment and scrapings; for ear mites, give one dose and re-examine after one month.
  • Weigh accurately and use one whole 11 mg tablet only at 2-4 kg. Do not divide the tablet.

A strong broad-spectrum canine option when ectoparasite control and an additional labelled nematode target coincide; avoid using the fixed combination when one component adds no clinical value.

Regulatory and scientific credibility9.5/10

All five exact weight bands are centrally authorised in the EU, covered by a current official SPC and registered in Georgia, with an extensive indication-specific evidence package.

Clinical efficacy9.0/10

Controlled and field studies support high efficacy across major labelled fleas, ticks, mites and nematodes, including heartworm and lungworm prevention; the fixed combination is justified only when both components are clinically needed.

Safety and tolerability7.0/10

Usually well tolerated, but isoxazoline-associated neurologic reactions, macrocyclic-lactone susceptibility, heartworm screening, young or underweight dogs and unestablished reproductive safety require deliberate case selection.

Clinical practicality8.5/10

A palatable monthly whole chew and clear weight bands are convenient in practice, but the tablet cannot be divided and the indication, body weight, heartworm status and treatment interval must be checked.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Price was not assessed and is excluded from the overall score.

Important safety and use flags

  • Use only when flea or tick control and one or more other labelled parasite targets are indicated simultaneously; avoid the fixed combination when one active component is unnecessary.
  • In heartworm-endemic areas, test dogs before administration; the product does not kill adult heartworms and infected dogs require specialist management.
  • Use caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders and strictly observe the recommended dose in Collies and related breeds.
  • For dogs younger than 8 weeks or below 1.35 kg, use only after an individual benefit-risk assessment; safety in breeding males and during pregnancy or lactation is not established.

NexGard Spectra

75 mg/15 mg, afoxolaner 75 mg + milbemycin oxime 15 mg, chewable tablet for dogs 15-30 kg
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Full labelled canine mixed-parasite scope, only when flea or tick control and one or more other labelled parasite targets are indicated at the same time · By mouth
Care settingVeterinary-selected monthly or indication-specific integrated parasite control after diagnosis and exposure-risk assessment
vetman score 8.5/10 Very good
Evidence confidence: High Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 43-11, 352-11 · Verified on 15 Oct 2026
