vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

vetman score 6.7/10 Situational / acceptable
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

An effective authorised canine sedative with a clear exact dose, but not a benign or complete anaesthetic. Its cardiovascular/respiratory burden and older protocol make careful selection, balanced analgesia and full monitoring decisive.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.0/10

The exact 50 ml product has current Czech and Georgian veterinary registration, regulator-visible identity and a transparent exact instruction; separate Slovak authorisation and current same-strength controls support class applicability. The legacy dossier and limited exact-product outcome/pharmacovigilance publications cap the score.

Clinical efficacy7.0/10

Xylazine reliably produces dose-dependent canine sedation and muscle relaxation, and direct physiologic studies confirm effect. Responses vary, modern guidance often prefers more selective alpha-2 agonists, and xylazine alone does not supply dependable surgical analgesia.

Safety and tolerability5.0/10

Clinically important bradycardia/AV block, biphasic blood pressure, reduced cardiac output, arrhythmia, respiratory depression, emesis, hypothermia, hyperglycaemia and rare arrest require strict selection and monitoring. Airway disease, shock, cardiac/respiratory/hepatic/renal disease, diabetes, seizures and GI obstruction are hard exclusions.

Clinical practicality7.0/10

A single IM injection and familiar 20 mg/ml concentration are operationally simple, but 0.05–0.15 ml/kg must be measured accurately and cannot be titrated IV on this exact label. Pre-assessment, fasting plan, combination-dose reduction, monitoring and recovery staffing are substantial requirements.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Current Georgian full-course price and vial-wastage data were unavailable; price is excluded from the denominator.

Important safety and use flags

  • Use only after examination in a monitored veterinary setting with oxygen, airway/ventilation and cardiovascular resuscitation capability. Record exact weight, concentration, route, total dose, co-drugs and times.
  • Do not use with GI obstruction, significant cardiac disease or ventricular arrhythmia, respiratory insufficiency, hepatic/renal impairment, seizure history, hypotension/shock or diabetes; avoid in puppies/kittens under six weeks.
  • Exact dose is 1–3 mg/kg IM once; there is no dog IV dose on this Rometar label. Use the lowest effective dose, especially in older, obese, large or compromised dogs, and do not automatically give the printed one-third to one-half top-up.
  • Monitor ECG/rhythm, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygenation, ventilation, temperature and sedation depth continuously through recovery. Bradycardia/AV block can be severe, and an initial pressure rise may be followed by hypotension and reduced cardiac output.
  • Vomiting commonly occurs within minutes. Use an individual fasting plan, protect the airway and position/recover the patient to reduce regurgitation and aspiration risk; fasting does not eliminate that risk.
  • Xylazine alone is not reliable surgical analgesia or general anaesthesia. For painful procedures provide local/general anaesthesia and multimodal analgesia, reducing all interacting sedative/anaesthetic doses to effect.
  • Other CNS depressants are additive. Do not combine with epinephrine or other sympathomimetics because ventricular arrhythmia may follow; reconcile every co-drug and avoid casual protocol substitution.
  • Brachycephalic airway disease can cause life-threatening dyspnoea; deep-chested breeds may bloat. Pregnancy requires benefit–risk assessment and late-pregnancy use is contraindicated except at parturition.
  • An alpha-2 antagonist may reverse selected effects but does not erase aspiration, hypoxaemia, arrhythmia, temperature, fluid or co-anaesthetic risk. Calculate the antagonist protocol and continue monitoring for pain, haemodynamic change or re-sedation.
  • Prevent accidental self-injection, ingestion and skin/eye/mucosal exposure. After exposure seek urgent medical advice and do not drive; pregnant handlers need special caution. Store below 25°C, protect from light and discard 28 days after opening.

An authorised effective feline sedative whose frequent emesis, respiratory/cardiovascular burden and small-volume dosing make it a conditional monitored option rather than a routine default.

Clinical efficacy6.5/10

Authorised exact labeling and established alpha-2 pharmacology support feline sedation, but direct modern feline clinical-outcome evidence is thinner and response at the exact upper dose includes respiratory depression. It is premedication, not complete anaesthesia or stand-alone surgical analgesia.

Safety and tolerability4.5/10

Frequent onset emesis plus bradycardia/AV block, pressure and cardiac-output change, respiratory depression at the upper label dose, hyperglycaemia, hypothermia, polyuria and rare arrest create a narrow safety margin. Late pregnancy also carries a specific uterine/premature-labour hazard.

Clinical practicality6.5/10

A single IM/SC injection is simple, but a 0.05–0.1 ml/kg volume can be very small and handling plus vomiting/airway preparation matter. Individual fasting, combination-dose reduction, continuous monitoring and full supervised recovery limit convenience despite one administration.

  • Exact dose is 1–2 mg/kg IM or SC once; the upper limit may depress respiration. Measure the small volume accurately, use the lowest effective dose and do not automatically give the printed one-third to one-half top-up.
  • Monitor ECG/rhythm, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygenation, ventilation, temperature and sedation depth continuously through recovery. Bradycardia/AV block can be severe, and an initial pressure rise may be followed by hypotension and reduced cardiac output.

  • Other CNS depressants are additive. Do not combine with epinephrine or other sympathomimetics because ventricular arrhythmia may follow; reconcile every co-drug and avoid casual protocol substitution.
  • Do not use in late pregnancy because uterine contraction and premature labour may occur; earlier pregnancy requires explicit benefit–risk assessment. Anticipate hyperglycaemia and polyuria, especially when metabolic status matters.
