Known Drug Interactions

  • Major warning Benazepril + Telmisartan
Available data in cats with CKD show no known interaction between telmisartan and other drugs acting on the RAAS (ARBs, ACE inhibitors), but combining drugs that act on the RAAS can change kidney function.
Recommendation: Use an ACE inhibitor and an angiotensin-receptor blocker together only after an individual benefit-risk assessment. Monitor creatinine, potassium, blood pressure, and hydration closely so deterioration in renal function is detected promptly.
Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · IRIS
  • Minor warning Benazepril + Amlodipine
Both drugs lower blood pressure, so hypotension is theoretically possible when they are combined. In hypertensive cats treated with amlodipine and benazepril together, however, no hypotension caused by the combination has been observed.
Recommendation: This combination is not prohibited and may be used when one agent does not adequately control blood pressure. Measure blood pressure before treatment and ensure adequate hydration. Target systolic pressure is below 160 mmHg; below 120 mmHg or weakness/tachycardia indicates hypotension.
Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · IRIS
  • Minor warning Robenacoxib + Benazepril
When robenacoxib is used with drugs that affect renal blood flow, such as diuretics or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, monitor the patient clinically.
Recommendation: Monitor the patient clinically and check renal parameters.

vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Not rateable

A numerical product score cannot be assigned because catalogue entry 9111 identifies only a generic 2.5 mg benazepril tablet. It gives no trade name, manufacturer or marketing-authorisation holder, authorisation number, pack, exact label or independently verified formulation. Its dose records explicitly borrow the BenazeVet SPC as a comparator. BenazeVet has applicable dog/cat authorisations and substantial clinical evidence, but those facts cannot be transferred to an unidentified tablet to score its regulation, safety, subdivision, palatability, storage or practical dose delivery. Confirm the exact marketed product or convert this record to a verified BenazeVet presentation before numerical scoring.

Benazepril has a legitimate evidence-based adjunctive role in canine congestive heart failure, but current treatment is multimodal and pimobendan- or spironolactone-containing regimens outperform benazepril-centred comparison regimens in key trials. That ingredient-level judgment does not identify or validate this tablet.

Important safety and use flags

  • Exact product identity is missing. Do not infer manufacturer, authorisation, bioequivalence, excipients, flavouring, pack or quality from the generic catalogue name.
  • BenazeVet is the documented clinical and dosing comparator, not the identified product in this catalogue row. Its authorisation and product-specific properties must not be represented as belonging to this unidentified tablet.
  • In dogs, use benazepril only as part of a complete, stage-appropriate congestive-heart-failure plan. It is not a substitute for diagnosis, diuresis when congested, pimobendan or other indicated components, and routine use in preclinical MMVD is not uniformly supported.
  • Placebo-controlled evidence supports benefit in canine CHF, but QUEST found longer event-free survival with pimobendan than with benazepril-based conventional therapy, and BESST found spironolactone plus benazepril superior to benazepril alone with furosemide.
  • Do not start an ACE inhibitor in a dehydrated, hypovolaemic or haemodynamically unstable patient. Correct volume deficits first; monitor blood pressure, hydration, creatinine/SDMA, urea and electrolytes after initiation and dose changes.
  • Do not use with hypotension, hypovolaemia, hyponatraemia, acute renal failure, hypersensitivity, or cardiac-output failure caused by aortic or pulmonary stenosis. Safety and efficacy are not established below 2.5 kg for the BenazeVet comparator.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or lactation. Breeding safety is not established and ACE inhibition has recognised fetal risk; prevent accidental ingestion, especially by pregnant people and children.
  • Review NSAIDs, other hypotensive medicines, anaesthetics/sedatives and potassium-sparing diuretics. Monitor renal function, hypotension and potassium; do not assume absence of an interaction merely because common CHF combinations have been used.
  • This generic 2.5 mg row is marked as a scored tablet, but exact equal subdivision, palatability, half-tablet shelf life and storage are properties of a verified formulation. Do not transfer those BenazeVet features until the actual product is identified.

Benazepril can reduce proteinuria in cats with CKD and is included among RAAS-inhibitor options, but an all-cat survival benefit has not been shown and telmisartan has stronger comparative UPC results.

  • In cats, the supported role is reduction of persistent renal proteinuria associated with CKD, not general treatment of every cat with CKD, not stand-alone control of systemic hypertension and not a proven survival-extending claim.
  • Feline trials support reduction in UPC, but the largest placebo-controlled study did not show a significant overall renal-survival benefit. In an active-comparator trial telmisartan was noninferior and produced significant UPC reductions where benazepril did not.
  • Do not start an ACE inhibitor in a dehydrated, hypovolaemic or haemodynamically unstable patient. Correct volume deficits first; monitor blood pressure, hydration, creatinine/SDMA, urea and electrolytes after initiation and dose changes.
