vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Vetergesic Multidose

0.3 mg/ml, solution for injection for dogs and cats
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Perioperative/postoperative analgesia with exact Vetergesic Multidose 0.3 mg/ml · IM,IV
Care settingVeterinary perioperative care with controlled-drug custody, multimodal analgesia, formal pain scoring and cardiorespiratory monitoring
vetman score 7.6/10 Good
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: No · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A well-defined authorised clinic opioid with useful IM/IV flexibility and credible canine evidence; best within monitored multimodal analgesia, not as an automatic sole analgesic.

Regulatory and scientific credibility9.0/10

Exact current GB/European authorisations identify Ceva, the 10 ml multidose formulation, dog/cat species and IM/IV routes. The exact product is absent in GE/US.

Clinical efficacy7.5/10

The exact postoperative and sedation-potentiation label, guidelines and direct canine studies support efficacy, but rescue needs vary and multimodal use is preferable.

Safety and tolerability6.5/10

Established monitored opioid use, but respiratory/cardiovascular depression, variable response, organ-dysfunction cautions, interactions and incomplete antagonist reversal constrain safety.

Clinical practicality7.0/10

IM/IV flexibility and a multidose vial suit hospital use. Tiny microgram doses require an accurately graduated syringe, strict repeat logic and controlled-drug governance; clinic administration itself is not penalised.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Current exact Georgian price/availability and a comparable treatment-period cost are not verified; cost is excluded.

Important safety and use flags

  • MICROGRAMS, not milligrams: 10–20 micrograms/kg equals 0.01–0.02 mg/kg and 0.03–0.06 ml/kg of this 0.3 mg/ml product. A unit error can be catastrophic.
  • This is exact Vetergesic Multidose: 10 ml vial, chlorocresol preservative, IM/IV. Do not substitute the separate IM-only 1 ml ampoules or US Simbadol/Zorbium concentrations and regimens.
  • Dog repeat timing depends on the administered dose: 10 microgram/kg after 3–4 hours or 20 microgram/kg after 5–6 hours. Reassess pain; an alternative class may be needed rather than automatic repetition.
  • Use formal pain scoring and multimodal analgesia. Individual opioid response varies and a repeat dose may fail; provide rescue analgesia rather than accepting uncontrolled pain.
  • Monitor respiratory rate/effort, oxygenation, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, sedation and recovery. Risk rises with impaired respiration, shock or renal, cardiac, hepatic/biliary dysfunction.
  • Do not administer intrathecally or epidurally, and do not use pre-operatively for caesarean section. Lactation use is not recommended; pregnancy requires a benefit-risk decision.
  • Other centrally acting sedatives can augment heart-rate and respiratory depression; reduce companion sedative doses and monitor. Do not combine casually with other opioids, including methadone or butorphanol.
  • Naloxone or respiratory stimulants may help, but opioid antagonists may not fully reverse buprenorphine and repeat dosing/infusion can be needed because of its duration. Support ventilation and circulation.
  • Sedation, bradycardia and occasionally hypertension/tachycardia can occur. Premedication can reduce anaesthetic requirements, so adjust the whole protocol rather than considering each drug independently.
  • This is a high-risk controlled opioid. Maintain lawful procurement, secure storage, access/usage logs, reconciliation and witnessed disposal. Product registration does not remove controlled-drug obligations.

Evidence confidence: High Georgia: No · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A well-defined authorised clinic opioid with direct multicentre feline evidence; strong for monitored postoperative use when the one-repeat ceiling and respiratory/behavioural effects are respected.

Regulatory and scientific credibility9.0/10

Exact current GB/European authorisations identify Ceva, the 10 ml multidose formulation, dog/cat species and IM/IV routes. The exact product is absent in GE/US.

Clinical efficacy8.0/10

The exact postoperative label, a 153-cat multicentre randomised product trial and additional perioperative evidence provide strong direct support.

Safety and tolerability6.5/10

Established monitored opioid use, but respiratory/cardiovascular depression, variable response, organ-dysfunction cautions, interactions and incomplete antagonist reversal constrain safety.

Known Contraindications

  • Critical
Known hypersensitivity to buprenorphine or any excipient is a contraindication.
  • Warning
Do not use buprenorphine before caesarean section because it can cause respiratory depression in the offspring around birth. Use cautiously during pregnancy and, if needed after surgery, monitor the dam and neonates closely.
  • Warning
Buprenorphine is not recommended during lactation because concentrations in milk can equal or exceed plasma concentrations.
  • Warning
Buprenorphine can cause respiratory depression. Use cautiously in animals with impaired respiratory function or in those receiving other drugs that depress respiration.
  • Warning
Use buprenorphine cautiously in hepatic impairment, especially biliary-tract disease, because hepatic metabolism affects the intensity and duration of its action.
  • Warning
Buprenorphine carries greater risk in renal, cardiac, or hepatic dysfunction and in shock. Use only after a careful benefit-risk assessment with appropriate monitoring.
  • Warning
Use buprenorphine cautiously in cardiac dysfunction or shock because cardiovascular adverse effects, including bradycardia and occasionally hypertension or tachycardia, may occur.
  • Caution
Do not administer buprenorphine intrathecally or epidurally. Opioid antagonists may not fully reverse its effects; naloxone can help with respiratory depression but repeated dosing or infusion may be required because buprenorphine is long acting.
  • Caution
Safety of buprenorphine has not been established in animals younger than 7 weeks.

Known Drug Interactions

  • Major warning Methadone + Buprenorphine
Do not combine buprenorphine with morphine or other opioid analgesics, including fentanyl, pethidine, methadone, or butorphanol, because their analgesic effects may be unpredictable or antagonistic.
Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently; buprenorphine may antagonize a mu-opioid agonist.
  • Minor warning Buprenorphine + Acepromazine
Centrally acting drugs, including tranquillisers, sedatives, and hypnotics, can increase buprenorphine-induced drowsiness. Combined use with sedatives can also increase depression of heart rate and respiration.
Recommendation: Reduce the sedative dose during premedication; monitor heart rate and respiration.
  • Minor warning Buprenorphine + Dexmedetomidine
Centrally acting drugs, including tranquillisers, sedatives, and hypnotics, can increase buprenorphine-induced drowsiness. Combined use with sedatives can also increase depression of heart rate and respiration.
Recommendation: Reduce the sedative dose during premedication; monitor heart rate and respiration.
