Omeprazole Drug International

40 mg, powder for solution for injection, human medicine
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Off-label temporary intravenous omeprazole for a hospitalised dog with clinically justified acid suppression when oral treatment is not feasible · Intravenous
Care settingHospital-only temporary therapy with exact-product reconstitution, compatibility, slow administration and an early switch to a suitable oral veterinary presentation when enteral dosing becomes possible
vetman score 5.6/10 Weak evidence support
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Yes, human · № რ-038861 · Verified on 16 Oct 2026 Off-label use

A weak temporary IV option: the ingredient role is credible, but direct canine IV outcome evidence and the exact product preparation instruction are unavailable. Do not use a comparator reconstitution scheme without confirming this vial's own instruction.

Regulatory and scientific credibility5.5/10

The exact human IV product has a sourced current Georgian registration and identifiable strength and manufacturer, but no accessible exact-product preparation dossier was found; route handling must not be copied from a comparator without verification. It has no veterinary authorisation.

Clinical efficacy5.0/10

Omeprazole has strong oral veterinary acid-suppression evidence and consensus support for selected ulcerative or reflux disease, but direct canine evidence for this IV formulation and route is absent. Human IV use supports temporary substitution when oral therapy is impossible; veterinary outcome benefit is inferred, not demonstrated.

Safety and tolerability6.5/10

The ingredient is generally well tolerated short term, but these exact human IV products lack canine target-animal safety data. Preparation errors, incompatibility, rapid administration, hepatic dysfunction, hypersensitivity and CYP/pH-dependent interactions require hospital control; unnecessary prolonged suppression adds rebound and microbiome risks.

Clinical practicality5.5/10

A 40 mg vial can theoretically support weight-based hospital dosing, but an accessible exact-product reconstitution concentration, solvent, compatibility and in-use stability instruction was not found. Do not improvise from a comparator label; practicality remains limited until the exact instruction is verified.

Important safety and use flags

  • Do not use omeprazole as automatic cover for uncomplicated vomiting, gastritis, pancreatitis, hepatic disease, renal disease, corticosteroids or NSAIDs without an individual ulceration/bleeding rationale. Diagnose and treat the underlying cause.
  • Do not use after a previous hypersensitivity reaction to omeprazole, another substituted benzimidazole or an excipient. Stop and treat urgently for facial swelling, bronchospasm, collapse or anaphylaxis.
  • Alarm signs such as weight loss, recurrent vomiting, dysphagia, haematemesis, melaena or anaemia require investigation. Acid suppression can mask signs and delay diagnosis of neoplasia, foreign material or another bleeding lesion.
  • Severe hepatic dysfunction can increase systemic exposure. Review liver disease, clinical response and adverse effects and use the lowest justified effective regimen.
  • Review concurrent medicines: CYP2C19 effects can alter clopidogrel, diazepam, phenytoin, warfarin or tacrolimus exposure, while raised gastric pH can reduce absorption of itraconazole/ketoconazole, mycophenolate, iron and other pH-dependent drugs.
  • Reassess prolonged treatment. Sustained acid suppression can cause hypergastrinaemia, altered gastrointestinal flora or infection risk and impaired magnesium/cobalamin/iron handling; monitor according to duration and patient risk.
  • After more than 3-4 weeks of treatment, do not stop abruptly unless safety requires it. Taper a clinically unnecessary PPI to reduce rebound acid hypersecretion and recurrence of acid-related signs.
  • This is an IV-only 40 mg vial, but its exact reconstitution and compatibility instruction is not accessible in the assessed sources. Do not copy the solvent, concentration, rate or stability from another omeprazole vial; verify the product insert before use.
