Important safety and use flags
Do not combine with apomorphine: profound hypotension and loss of consciousness have been reported. This is especially relevant when apomorphine is being considered as an emetic in a dog. Rule out gastrointestinal obstruction, progressive ileus and gastric distension when clinically plausible. Ondansetron is not prokinetic and suppression of vomiting must not delay diagnosis or decompression. Review congenital long-QT risk, bradyarrhythmia, heart failure, hypokalaemia or hypomagnesaemia and other QT-prolonging drugs; use ECG monitoring when the combined risk is clinically important. Review serotonergic medicines and monitor for agitation, tremor, hyperreflexia, hyperthermia, diarrhoea or autonomic instability; stop and reassess if serotonin toxicity is suspected. Severe hepatic disease may reduce clearance and increase exposure. Use the lowest effective regimen and reassess interval, adverse effects and concurrent hepatically cleared medicines. Do not use after hypersensitivity to ondansetron or another 5-HT3 antagonist; rare anaphylaxis and bronchospasm require immediate treatment. Correct dehydration and clinically important electrolyte or acid-base disturbance, investigate the underlying cause and track vomiting, nausea behaviour, intake and bowel function.
