Known Drug Interactions

  • Major warning Enrofloxacin + Aminophylline
Theophylline metabolism is inhibited by erythromycin, cimetidine, propranolol, enrofloxacin, and marbofloxacin
Recommendation: Reduce the aminophylline dose during concomitant use. Signs of toxicity include vomiting, excitation, tachyarrhythmia, and seizures.
    Sources: MSD Vet Manual
  • Major warning Enrofloxacin + Doxycycline
Do not combine enrofloxacin with antimicrobials that act antagonistically to quinolones, including macrolides, tetracyclines such as doxycycline, and phenicols such as chloramphenicol.
Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently. Based on susceptibility testing, choose either a bactericidal fluoroquinolone or a bacteriostatic tetracycline.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Major warning Enrofloxacin + Theophylline
Do not use concurrently with theophylline as the elimination of theophylline may be delayed Concomitant administration of theophylline requires careful monitoring as serum levels of theophylline may increase
Recommendation: Avoid the combination where possible. If concomitant use is unavoidable, monitor serum theophylline and be prepared to reduce its dose.
    Sources: VMD
  • Minor warning Enrofloxacin + Sucralfate
The concomitant administration of substances containing magnesium or aluminium may reduce the absorption of enrofloxacin. These drugs should be administered two hours apart.
Recommendation: Separation is not critical in dogs, but a 2-hour interval is safe and label-consistent. No comparable measurement exists in cats; use a 2-hour interval in cats.

Not rateable

A numerical score cannot responsibly be assigned for dogs. Exact Teknovet Enrocure 10% is transparently identified, but its current label covers cattle, sheep and goats only and its Georgian authorisations expired on 2026-10-06. The ready solution contains 100 mg/ml enrofloxacin plus 30 mg/ml n-butanol. Current authorised companion-animal comparators are different products: GB Baytril is 25 mg/ml for dogs/cats, while US Baytril injection is 22.7 mg/ml, dog-only and used as a single IM loading dose. No Enrocure dog/cat dose, PK or bioequivalence bridge, validated dilution, dose-delivery study, local-tolerance/target-animal safety study or clinical outcome evidence was located. Ingredient efficacy and a matching nominal mg/kg number cannot establish this exact presentation’s benefit-risk.

Enrofloxacin has established veterinary antibacterial roles and authorised dog/cat formulations. That supports choosing an exact companion-animal product; it does not validate this expired-market, food-animal 100 mg/ml presentation. Publish no dog/cat dose or numerical product score.

Important safety and use flags

  • Exact-product boundary: current Teknovet Enrocure 10% is a 100 mg/ml cattle/sheep/goat product. Dogs and cats are absent from its target species, indications and regimen.
  • The historical Georgian authorisations expired on 2026-10-06 and the exact product is absent from the current NFA register. Retail availability does not restore authorisation or supply companion-animal evidence.
  • Do not transfer Baytril 25 mg/ml dosing. It is a different, four-fold less concentrated authorised dog/cat product; the shared 30 mg/ml n-butanol preservative and active ingredient do not establish bioequivalence or local tolerance.
  • Do not transfer US Baytril injection dosing. That 22.7 mg/ml dog-only product is used as one IM loading dose followed by tablets; it neither supports cats nor repeated Enrocure IV/SC treatment.
  • No calculator dose is published. A hypothetical 5 mg/kg conversion would be 0.1 ml in a 2 kg cat and 0.2 ml in a 4 kg cat; these figures illustrate dose-delivery risk but do not validate a regimen, syringe choice or improvised dilution.
  • Fluoroquinolones are EMA AMEG Category B (Restrict). Use only when culture/susceptibility and infection-site evidence justify them and a lower-category appropriate antimicrobial is unsuitable.
  • Avoid in growing dogs before skeletal maturity because fluoroquinolones can damage weight-bearing articular cartilage. Exact Enrocure canine age limits and target-animal safety are unknown.
  • Do not use against quinolone-resistant organisms. Cross-resistance is extensive; treatment failure requires diagnosis, source-control and susceptibility review, not blind dose escalation.
  • Exact-product dog/cat pregnancy, lactation, organ-disease, injection-site tolerance and repeated-dose safety are not established. Do not infer them from food-animal use or another enrofloxacin formulation.
  • Review interactions before any enrofloxacin use: avoid antagonistic tetracyclines/macrolides/phenicols; theophylline exposure can rise. Do not mix or dilute Enrocure without product-specific compatibility and stability evidence.

50 mg, enrofloxacin 50 mg, scored tablet for dogs
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Complete dog label: oral treatment of susceptible bacterial alimentary, respiratory, urogenital, skin, secondary-wound and otitis externa infections when enrofloxacin is the justified drug of choice · By mouth
Care settingOutpatient reserve-antimicrobial treatment after diagnosis and accurate weighing, with susceptibility testing whenever possible and planned clinical reassessment
vetman score 7.6/10 Good
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 162-11; 15-11 · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A well-documented, practical oral enrofloxacin presentation for an accurately diagnosed susceptible infection in an adult dog. Its value is good—not routine—because fluoroquinolones are Category B Restrict and should follow susceptibility-led justification when lower-category effective options are unsuitable.

Regulatory and scientific credibility9.0/10

The exact 50 mg presentation has current transparent EU and Georgian authorisations plus a current aligned KRKA GB authorisation/SPC. FDA-approved oral enrofloxacin products independently support the active/form endpoint, although this exact KRKA presentation is not FDA approved.

Clinical efficacy7.0/10

Enrofloxacin has established concentration-dependent activity and an exact authorised 5 mg/kg regimen across the susceptible dog label. Benefit remains organism-, site- and susceptibility-dependent; resistance and modern syndrome guidance make it a reserve rather than broad empirical default, and independent exact-generic outcome data across every bundled indication are limited.

Safety and tolerability6.5/10

Correctly selected adult dogs usually have a workable margin and very rare anorexia/vomiting, but rapid-growth cartilage injury, seizure/CNS risk, renal/hepatic caution, milk transfer, overdose without an antidote and clinically important antimicrobial, theophylline, anticoagulant and chelation interactions are material.

Clinical practicality8.0/10

Once-daily dosing, food flexibility, a 5-10-day course and half-tablet division are practical for correctly sized dogs. The 50 mg tablet supplies validated 5 kg steps only; smaller or intermediate doses need a more suitable strength rather than quarters/crushing, and a used half expires after 24 hours.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Current Georgian full-course price was unavailable; price is excluded from the denominator.

Important safety and use flags

  • Scope boundary: this is one assessment of the complete authorised susceptible-infection dog scope. It does not endorse prophylaxis, undiagnosed non-bacterial disease, every listed organism without susceptibility, cats or another enrofloxacin strength/formulation.
  • Stewardship hard stop: fluoroquinolones are EMA AMEG Category B (Restrict). Prefer an effective Category D/C or narrower option; use culture/susceptibility whenever possible and document why enrofloxacin is the justified choice.
  • Do not use in dogs under one year or exceptionally large breeds under 18 months: articular cartilage can be affected during rapid growth. Joint-cartilage disorder has an undetermined frequency.
  • Do not use in dogs with seizure disorders because CNS stimulation can occur. Stop and reassess neurologic or behavioural change; overdose can cause GI and CNS signs and has no specific antidote.
  • Use caution in severe renal or hepatic impairment and do not exceed 5 mg/kg/day. Weigh accurately and reassess exposure, response and organ function where clinically indicated.
  • Very rare anorexia and vomiting are reported. Reassess persistent GI signs, treatment failure, superinfection or clinical deterioration; source control and diagnosis matter more than blind dose escalation.
  • Do not combine with tetracyclines, phenicols or macrolides because of potential antagonism. Review oral anticoagulants and theophylline; separate or otherwise manage magnesium/aluminium products because absorption may be delayed.
  • Exact dose: 5 mg/kg/day PO for 5-10 days, once daily or the daily amount divided twice, with or without food. The 50 mg tablet equals 10 kg and validates halves only; do not invent quarters, crush-derived doses or the US 5-20 mg/kg range.
  • Enrofloxacin passes into milk; use during lactation only after veterinary benefit-risk assessment. The current exact SPC provides no separate pregnancy assurance, so do not infer pregnancy safety.
  • Return a half-tablet to the opened blister and use within 24 hours. Wash hands, avoid contact after known quinolone hypersensitivity and seek medical advice after accidental ingestion.
