  • Official route is slow intravenous injection only. Do not give IM or intra-arterially; the previous catalogue IV/IM route was incorrect.
  • Use only clear solution, do not mix with another medicine in the same injection or infusion, use immediately after opening and discard the remainder. Store below 30°C.
  • The authorised oral canine torasemide label prohibits combination with another loop diuretic such as furosemide. For this unsupported IV use, any switch requires deliberate potency, timing, response and monitoring decisions; milligrams are not interchangeable.
  • The human SPC contraindicates torasemide/related-sulfonylurea hypersensitivity and hepatic coma or precoma. Also avoid anuria, hypovolaemia, hypotension, important hyponatraemia/hypokalaemia and major urinary outflow obstruction.
  • Monitor respiratory effort, perfusion, blood pressure, urine output, body weight, hydration, creatinine/urea, sodium, potassium, chloride and acid-base status; reassess promptly after each treatment decision.
  • Review ACE inhibitors and other hypotensives, NSAIDs, digitalis, aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, platinum drugs, corticosteroids/mineralocorticoids, laxatives and other nephrotoxic or potassium-altering treatment.
  • Acute hypersensitivity including anaphylactic shock can occur after IV administration. Use only where immediate recognition and emergency treatment are possible.
  • The human label favours early conversion to oral treatment and no more than one week IV; these are handling boundaries, not a veterinary regimen. Exact reproductive and juvenile safety is unestablished.

A situational off-label human tablet for selected larger dogs when a prescribed oral torasemide dose can be delivered exactly as a whole or half and authorised veterinary strengths are unavailable. Canine torasemide efficacy is strong, but exact Trifas equivalence and coarse dose fit are limitations.

Two large prospective randomised studies found once-daily oral torasemide noninferior to furosemide for canine DMVD CHF and suggested longer time to cardiac endpoints.
