Do not use in cases of renal failure with anuria. Do not use in acute glomerular nephritis.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Critical
Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to furosemide, sulphonamides or to any of the excipients. Furosemide may increase the risk of sulfonamide cross-reactivity.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Warning
Furosemide should be used with caution in the case of pre-existing electrolyte and/or water imbalance, impaired hepatic function (may precipitate hepatic coma) and diabetes mellitus.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Warning
Furosemide may alter insulin requirements in diabetic animals.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Warning
Laboratory studies have shown evidence of teratogenic effects. The safety of the veterinary medicinal product has not been established during pregnancy or lactation.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Warning
However furosemide is excreted into milk... A deleterious effect on lactation is to be expected, particularly if drinking water is restricted.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
Known Drug Interactions
-
Contraindicated
Furosemide + Dihydrostreptomycin
Do not use concurrently with aminoglycoside antibiotic treatment. In cats, do not use furosemide with ototoxic antibiotics. Concomitant use with aminoglycosides or cephalosporins may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently. If an aminoglycoside is essential, choose a diuretic from another class.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Contraindicated
Furosemide + Torasemide
Do not use concomitantly with other loop diuretics.Recommendation: Substitute one for the other rather than adding them. A single torasemide dose is approximately 20 times as potent as a single furosemide dose in the pharmacodynamic model, so milligrams are not directly interchangeable.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Major warning
Furosemide + Ceftriaxone
Concomitant use with aminoglycosides or cephalosporins may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.Recommendation: Monitor renal parameters and hydration. Avoid the combination in a dehydrated patient.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Major warning
Furosemide + Prednisolone
Concurrent use with drugs affecting electrolyte balance (corticosteroids, other diuretics, amphotericin B, cardiac glycosides) requires careful monitoring.Recommendation: Monitor electrolytes, particularly potassium. Check periodically during prolonged combination therapy.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Minor warning
Furosemide + Amlodipine
Concomitant use of amlodipine with other agents that may reduce blood pressure may cause hypotension. These agents include: diuretics, beta-blockers, other calcium channel blockers, inhibitors of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system... and alpha-2 agonists. may sometimes result in a decrease in serum potassium and chloride levelsRecommendation: Before combining amlodipine with these agents, measure blood pressure and ensure that the cat is adequately hydrated. Monitor electrolytes and hydration during treatment.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · IRIS
-
Minor warning
Furosemide + Dexamethasone
The risk of hypokalaemia may be increased if dexamethasone is administered together with potassium depleting diuretics.Recommendation: Monitor serum potassium. Hypokalaemia also increases cardiac glycoside toxicity.Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
-
Minor warning
Robenacoxib + Furosemide
When robenacoxib is used with drugs that affect renal blood flow, such as diuretics or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, monitor the patient clinically.Recommendation: Monitor the patient clinically and check renal parameters.
-
Minor warning
Furosemide + Levothyroxine
Several drugs, including barbiturates, antacids, anabolic steroids, diazepam, and furosemide, can alter thyroid-hormone binding or metabolism and may affect the response to levothyroxine.Recommendation: Recheck T4 and adjust the dose as needed.
