vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Assessed clinical scopeDog · Adjunct oral spiramycin/metronidazole for diagnosed susceptible periodontal or related oral infection, with indicated professional dental or surgical source control; not routine prophylaxis or first-line empirical treatment · By mouth
Care settingVeterinary-directed course after oral examination and treatment planning, with professional cleaning, endodontic treatment, extraction or surgery when indicated and reassessment if response is inadequate
vetman score 6.5/10 Situational / acceptable
Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 213-11 · Verified on 21 Oct 2026

A transparent veterinary product for selected susceptible canine oral infection, but only where the whole 10-kg dosing unit matches the patient. It is an adjunct to dental source control, with limited direct outcome evidence and important antimicrobial/neurotoxicity precautions.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.0/10

The exact veterinary presentation has a sourced current Georgian registration and independently verified EU/EEA product information defining its strength, species, oral route and regimen. The dossier is transparent, although independent exact-product clinical outcome evidence remains limited.

Clinical efficacy5.5/10

The authorised spectrum fits mixed susceptible periodontal flora, and a six-dog study found a treatment-time reduction in selected dental-biofilm taxa. It did not test clinical cure, recurrence or superiority, while current dental and stewardship guidance makes source control primary and systemic antibiotics selective rather than routine.

Safety and tolerability6.0/10

The labelled 5-10-day course has a useful safety margin and gastrointestinal reactions are very rare, but metronidazole adds dose- and duration-related neurologic and genotoxic uncertainty, reproductive safety is not established, and concurrent macrolides are prohibited. Hepatic disease requires particular caution and is contraindicated by the bound Stomorgyl 20 label.

Clinical practicality6.5/10

Once-daily dosing for 5-10 days is simple, but the whole-only 1-tablet/10-kg unit cannot accurately fit many dogs between weight steps. Stomorgyl 2 or 20 should be selected when an authorised whole-unit strength matches better.

Important safety and use flags

  • Do not use this combination as routine dental prophylaxis or first-line empirical periodontal treatment. Examine and stage the mouth; professional cleaning, endodontic treatment, extraction or surgery is primary source control and must not be replaced by tablets.
  • Reserve treatment for a diagnosed susceptible aerobic/anaerobic oral infection when systemic antimicrobial benefit is expected. Obtain culture and susceptibility when feasible, follow local antimicrobial policy, use the shortest justified label course and reassess treatment failure rather than repeating empirically.
  • Do not administer concurrently with another macrolide antibiotic. Review the full medication list for additive antimicrobial exposure and avoid combining products that duplicate metronidazole.
  • Stop and assess promptly for ataxia, tremor, nystagmus, spasm, seizure, weakness or altered mentation. Metronidazole neurotoxicity is related to exposure and duration and cannot be dismissed because the planned course is short.
  • Safety in pregnancy and lactation is not established consistently across national Stomorgyl information. Verify the exact current Georgian leaflet and use only after an individual veterinary benefit-risk assessment; avoid unnecessary exposure.
  • Hepatic dysfunction can increase metronidazole exposure. Assess liver disease before use, limit duration and monitor closely; the bound Stomorgyl 20 label contraindicates use in hepatic disease.
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea or anorexia may occur. Record response and adverse effects, and remember that broad combination therapy alters oral and intestinal microbial ecology and selects resistance even when short-term tolerance appears good.
  • Give whole tablets only: one tablet corresponds to 10 kg. Do not divide or crush; choose Stomorgyl 2 or 20 when another authorised whole-unit strength matches the dog more accurately.

Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 213-11 · Verified on 21 Oct 2026

Although authorised for cats, the whole-only 10-kg tablet is a poor practical match for most feline doses. Prefer Stomorgyl 2 or another accurately deliverable authorised option when this combination is justified, always alongside dental source control.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.0/10

The exact veterinary presentation has a sourced current Georgian registration and independently verified EU/EEA product information defining its strength, species, oral route and regimen. The dossier is transparent, although independent exact-product clinical outcome evidence remains limited.

Clinical efficacy5.0/10

The product is authorised for cats and its spectrum plausibly covers susceptible mixed oral flora, but no applicable independent feline clinical outcome trial was found. Dental and stewardship guidance makes source control primary and systemic antibiotics selective, so efficacy confidence is lower than in dogs.

Clinical practicality1.5/10

The tablet must not be divided or crushed and one whole tablet corresponds to 10 kg. That is a poor dose-delivery match for most cats; the exact label itself directs clinicians toward Stomorgyl 2 for feline patients.

  • This whole-only tablet corresponds to 10 kg and is unsuitable for accurate dosing in most cats. Do not divide or crush; Stomorgyl 2 is the label-directed smaller-patient strength.

Known Contraindications

  • Critical Metronidazole
Do not use in cases of hepatic disorders.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Critical Metronidazole
Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Critical Metronidazole
In dogs, high doses can cause neurotoxicity: tremor, muscle spasms, ataxia and even seizures, especially after a long course. The risk rises when the recommended dose or treatment length is exceeded. If neurological signs appear, stop metronidazole and treat the signs.
Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · MSD Vet Manual
  • Warning Metronidazole
Studies in laboratory animals have shown inconsistent results with regard to teratogenic/embryotoxic effects of metronidazole. Therefore, use of this veterinary medicinal product during pregnancy is not recommended.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Warning Metronidazole
Metronidazole is excreted in milk and use during lactation is therefore not recommended.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Warning Metronidazole
tremors, muscle spasms, ataxia, and even convulsions
    Sources: MSD Vet Manual
  • Warning Metronidazole (Cat)
Metronidazole in cats: neurotoxicity (ataxia, altered mentation, tremors, seizures) is reported with high doses and long courses (58 mg/kg a day for 6 months; 111-222 mg/kg a day; 73.5-147 mg/kg a day). Keep to the label dose and duration; stop the drug at the first neurological sign.

Known Drug Interactions

  • Major warning Metronidazole + Phenobarbital
Phenobarbital may increase hepatic metabolism of metronidazole resulting in decreased serum concentration of metronidazole.
Recommendation: Metronidazole may be less effective than expected in a patient receiving phenobarbital. Monitor clinical response.
