A numerical score cannot responsibly be assigned for dogs. Exact Marboflex 10% is transparently identified and registered in Georgia, but its current manufacturer information is cattle-only and the Georgian authorisation is restricted to cattle, horses, sheep and goats—not companion animals. It is a 100 mg/ml ready solution containing 10 mg/ml benzyl alcohol. The current authorised dog/cat injectable comparator, Marbocyl SA, is a different powder-and-solvent product reconstituted to 10 mg/ml with different excipients and species-specific regimens; current EU 100 mg/ml comparators are likewise food-animal products. No exact-product dog/cat label dose, dilution protocol, bioequivalence/PK bridge, target-animal safety study or clinical outcome evidence was found. The owner-approved prescription workflow can calculate the comparator’s 2 mg/kg SC dose as 0.02 ml/kg for this concentration, but that arithmetic does not establish this presentation’s benefit-risk or validate an improvised dilution.

Marbofloxacin has established authorised injectable dog/cat dosing. In the prescribing workflow Marboflex 10% therefore calculates 2 mg/kg SC as 0.02 ml/kg at 100 mg/ml, explicitly off-label. The exact cattle product still lacks a dog/cat formulation bridge; use accurate low-volume delivery and never substitute its bovine IM regimen.

Important safety and use flags

  • Exact-product boundary: Teknovet Marboflex 10% is a 100 mg/ml cattle product. Its current label does not authorise dogs or cats and supplies no companion-animal dose, dilution method or treatment course.
  • Prescription-workflow exception: calculate the authorised injectable marbofloxacin comparator dose of 2 mg/kg SC as 0.02 ml/kg at this 100 mg/ml strength. This is explicitly off-label and does not establish bioequivalence, PK or target-animal safety for Marboflex 10%.
  • Dose-delivery warning: 2 mg/kg requires only 0.08 ml in a 4 kg patient. Verify syringe accuracy and the final volume independently; do not improvise dilution or use the cattle IM regimen as a dog/cat schedule.
  • Fluoroquinolones are EMA AMEG Category B (Restrict). Do not use empirically or as routine first choice; obtain culture and susceptibility whenever feasible and document why a lower-category antimicrobial is unsuitable.
  • Do not use for organisms resistant to quinolones or when susceptibility and the infection site do not support marbofloxacin. Cross-resistance is extensive; failure calls for diagnosis, source-control and antibiogram review, not automatic escalation.
  • Avoid in growing animals until skeletal maturity because fluoroquinolones can damage weight-bearing articular cartilage. Age limits from authorised dog/cat products cannot be borrowed as a Marboflex 10% label.
  • Fluoroquinolones can cause neurologic excitation and seizures; use particular caution in dogs with seizure disorders. Exact Marboflex 10% target-animal neurologic safety and overdose margin are not established.
  • The exact cattle information cautions against use with hepatic or renal insufficiency, dehydration and hypersensitivity and reports possible injection-site inflammation. These cattle warnings do not establish frequency, severity or therapeutic margin in dogs or cats.
  • Dog/cat pregnancy, lactation and breeding safety for exact Marboflex 10% are not established. Do not infer safety from bovine use or from reproductive studies of another formulation.
  • Review the full medication plan: fluoroquinolones may raise theophylline exposure; the exact manufacturer information also warns about interactions with coumarins, methylxanthines, NSAIDs and probenecid. Avoid unvalidated syringe mixtures or improvised dilution.

  • Cats carry a fluoroquinolone class warning for retinal toxicity. Marbofloxacin appears less retinotoxic than enrofloxacin, but no Marboflex 10% feline ocular-safety or overdose study exists; visual change, mydriasis or disorientation requires immediate reassessment.

Information not fully verified The exact label is cattle-only. For the owner-approved dog/cat prescribing workflow, the calculator uses the authorised injectable marbofloxacin comparator dose of 2 mg/kg SC, which equals 0.02 ml/kg at 100 mg/ml (0.08 ml for 4 kg). This is an off-label ingredient-level calculation, not a Marboflex dog/cat label claim; do not use the bovine IM regimen and do not improvise a dilution.

Known Contraindications

  • Critical
Do not use in animals hypersensitive to fluoroquinolones or any product component. Do not use where quinolone resistance is confirmed; cross-resistance among fluoroquinolones is almost complete.
Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · FDA
  • Critical (Dog)
Age limits differ by product: one label prohibits use in dogs younger than 12 months and in slow-growing large breeds younger than 18 months; another uses 8 months for small/medium breeds, 12 months for large breeds, and 18 months for giant breeds. Fluoroquinolones can erode articular cartilage in growing dogs.
Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · FDA
  • Critical (Cat)
Marbofloxacin is contraindicated in cats under 12 months of age
Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · FDA
  • Warning
Use with caution in dogs or cats with epilepsy because fluoroquinolones can cause neurological adverse effects. Overdose may cause acute neurological disturbances requiring symptomatic management.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Warning
Safety in pregnant dogs and cats has not been established. Use only after a benefit-risk assessment. Studies in pregnant rats and rabbits found no adverse effects, but target-species studies are lacking; this means unassessed, not proven safe.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Warning
Safety during lactation in dogs and cats has not been established. Use only after a benefit-risk assessment; the reviewed labels provide pregnancy data but no separate lactation statement.
    Sources: FDA
  • Warning (Cat)
The use of fluoroquinolones in cats has been reported to adversely affect the retina. Such products should be used with caution in cats. retin Ophthalmoscopy revealed no treatment-related eye abnormalities.
    Sources: FDA

Known Drug Interactions

  • Major warning Marbofloxacin + Aminophylline
Theophylline metabolism is inhibited by... enrofloxacin, and marbofloxacin
Recommendation: Reduce the aminophylline dose during concomitant use. Signs of toxicity include vomiting, excitation, tachyarrhythmia, and seizures.
    Sources: MSD Vet Manual
  • Major warning Marbofloxacin + Sucralfate
Sucralfate, antacids, and mineral supplements containing iron, aluminium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, or other divalent or trivalent cations can reduce quinolone absorption and bioavailability. The magnitude is drug-specific; marbofloxacin is covered by a direct product warning.
Recommendation: Avoid concurrent oral administration. If both medicines are necessary, separate sucralfate or the cation-containing product from the quinolone by at least 2 hours and monitor clinical response.
Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · FDA · ACVIM · JVIM
  • Major warning Marbofloxacin + Theophylline
Fluoroquinolones can increase serum theophylline concentrations. When marbofloxacin and theophylline are used together, monitor theophylline closely because its therapeutic range is narrow and toxicity may occur.
Recommendation: If concomitant use is necessary, monitor serum theophylline and be prepared to reduce its dose. Alternatively, choose another antibiotic.
