Care settingVeterinary prescription after diagnosis for oral treatment at home
vetman score 6.2/10 Situational / acceptable
Evidence confidence: Low Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 000831 · Verified on 21 Oct 2026

A situational, guideline-aligned first-line antimicrobial for small dogs at a standard doxycycline dose. Extend the course to what the diagnosis needs rather than the label's 3-5 days.

Regulatory and scientific credibility5.0/10

The exact product is registered in Georgia (000831, valid to 2030) with an AVZ instruction (2023 Russian edition); it has no EU, UK or US authorisation documented in the reviewed evidence or product study, but 10 mg/kg once daily is a well-established authorised doxycycline dose.

Clinical efficacy6.5/10

Doxycycline is first-line in ISCAID respiratory guidance and a WSAVA essential medicine, covering Mycoplasma, Bordetella and tick-borne rickettsial agents; bioequivalence is unproven and the 3-5 day acute course is shorter than guideline courses.

Safety and tolerability7.0/10

Generally well tolerated; nausea is reduced by giving with food. The label excludes marked hepatic or renal dysfunction and tooth development, and asks for supervision in pregnancy and lactation.

Clinical practicality6.5/10

One chewable tablet per 2 kg once daily suits small dogs, but the tablet may be unscored, giving coarse 2 kg steps, and larger dogs need many tablets.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

No verified current Georgian price or patient-adjusted course cost was found; foreign prices were not substituted.

Important safety and use flags

  • Do not use with tetracycline hypersensitivity, marked hepatic or renal dysfunction, or in puppies during tooth development.
  • Give apart from calcium, magnesium, iron or aluminium products and antacids; the label also lists barbiturates, phenytoin and avoidance with penicillins or cephalosporins.
  • Guideline courses are usually 7-10 days for acute bacterial respiratory infection and longer for Mycoplasma or tick-borne disease; the label's 3-5 days may be too short.
  • Give during or right after a meal to reduce nausea and oesophageal irritation; recheck if vomiting persists.
  • Doxycycline is EU AMEG Category D (Prudence) and a WSAVA essential medicine: a sound first choice when indicated.

A situational, guideline-aligned first-line antimicrobial for cats in a cat-sized strength. Follow every dose with water or food and run courses to guideline length, not the label's 3-5 days.

Regulatory and scientific credibility5.0/10

The exact product is registered in Georgia (000831, valid to 2030) with an AVZ instruction (2023 Russian edition); it has no EU, UK or US authorisation documented in the reviewed evidence or product study, but 10 mg/kg once daily is a well-established doxycycline dose.

Clinical efficacy6.5/10

Doxycycline is the first-line drug for feline bacterial upper respiratory infection, Mycoplasma and Chlamydia felis in ISCAID and ABCD guidance; bioequivalence is unproven and the label's 3-5 day course is much shorter than the 4 weeks needed for Chlamydia felis.

Safety and tolerability6.0/10

Doxycycline tablets can lodge in the feline oesophagus and cause oesophagitis and stricture unless followed by food or water; the label also excludes marked hepatic or renal dysfunction and tooth development.

Clinical practicality6.5/10

One small chewable tablet per 2 kg once daily fits cats well, although an unscored tablet gives coarse steps between body weights.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

No verified current Georgian price or patient-adjusted course cost was found; foreign prices were not substituted.

Important safety and use flags

  • In cats, follow every tablet with food or about 5 ml of water to prevent oesophageal stricture; watch for drooling, gagging or difficulty swallowing.
  • Do not use with tetracycline hypersensitivity, marked hepatic or renal dysfunction, or in kittens during tooth development.
  • Chlamydia felis needs about 4 weeks of doxycycline for all cats in the household, and acute bacterial upper respiratory infection usually 7-10 days.
  • Give apart from calcium, magnesium, iron or aluminium products and antacids; the label also lists barbiturates and phenytoin.
  • Doxycycline is EU AMEG Category D (Prudence) and a WSAVA essential medicine: a sound first choice when indicated.

A weak fit for cats despite a first-line active: the 100 mg tablet is too large for accurate feline dosing. Prefer the 20 mg strength, follow every dose with water or food and run courses to guideline length.

Regulatory and scientific credibility5.0/10

The exact product is registered in Georgia (000830, valid to 2030) with an AVZ instruction (2023 Russian edition); it has no EU, UK or US authorisation documented in the reviewed evidence or product study, but 10 mg/kg once daily is a well-established doxycycline dose.

Clinical practicality5.5/10

For most cats a half 100 mg tablet is the smallest step, which gives well above 10 mg/kg below 5 kg; the 20 mg strength fits cats better.

Known Contraindications

  • Critical
administration of doxycycline hyclate tablets has been associated with oesophageal erosion.
Sources: VMD SPC · VMD · ISCAID · JVIM
  • Critical
Do not use in animals with renal or hepatic insufficiency. Special warnings: None.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Critical
Product labels differ: some contraindicate doxycycline in hepatic insufficiency, while others advise special caution and monitoring because liver-enzyme increases have been reported. Follow the label of the selected product and monitor hepatic function.
    Sources: Product label
  • Critical
Do not use doxycycline tablets in animals with vomiting or dysphagia when the product label lists these conditions as contraindications. Other labels advise caution because impaired swallowing or vomiting increases the risk of a tablet lodging in the oesophagus.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Critical
Do not use doxycycline in puppies or kittens before tooth-enamel formation is complete when the product label lists this as a contraindication. Doxycycline is less likely than other tetracyclines to cause tooth abnormalities because it binds calcium less strongly, but the labelled restriction still applies.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Warning
Tetracyclines as a class can retard foetal skeletal development (fully reversible) The safety of the veterinary medicinal product has not been established during pregnancy
    Sources: VMD
  • Warning
The safety of the veterinary medicinal product has not been established during pregnancy and lactation.
    Sources: VMD
  • Warning
Do not use in animals with known photosensitivity. During treatment, avoid prolonged intense sunlight, particularly in light-coloured or sparsely haired animals, because photosensitivity and photodermatitis may occur.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Warning (Cat)
Doxycycline tablets and capsules can lodge in the cat oesophagus and cause oesophagitis and stricture (regurgitation, at varying times after the course). Follow every tablet or capsule with a water bolus or food.

Known Drug Interactions

  • Major warning Enrofloxacin + Doxycycline
Do not combine enrofloxacin with antimicrobials that act antagonistically to quinolones, including macrolides, tetracyclines such as doxycycline, and phenicols such as chloramphenicol.
Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently. Based on susceptibility testing, choose either a bactericidal fluoroquinolone or a bacteriostatic tetracycline.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Major warning Ampicillin + Doxycycline
It is not recommended to administer bactericidal and bacteriostatic antibiotics concomitantly.
Recommendation: If both are required, support the choice with culture and susceptibility results. Otherwise, choose one mechanism.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Major warning Amoxicillin + Doxycycline
The bactericidal effect of amoxicillin may be inhibited by the concomitant use of bacteriostatic antimicrobials.
Recommendation: If both are required, support the choice with culture and susceptibility results. Otherwise, choose one mechanism.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Major warning Doxycycline + Phenobarbital
Phenobarbital, phenytoin, carbamazepine, and other enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs can shorten the half-life of doxycycline and reduce its antibacterial exposure. Standard doxycycline dosing may therefore be subtherapeutic.
Recommendation: If the patient receives phenobarbital and doxycycline is essential, the standard 10 mg/kg dose may be inadequate; monitor clinical response closely. Alternatively, choose an antibiotic from another class based on susceptibility testing.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Major warning Doxycycline + Procaine Benzylpenicillin
Tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, macrolides, and lincosamides may antagonise the bactericidal action of benzylpenicillin.
Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently. Choose one mechanism based on susceptibility testing.
    Sources: VMD SPC · VMD
  • Major warning Doxycycline + Sucralfate
In dogs, concurrent administration of sucralfate suspension reduced doxycycline AUC from 36.0 to 7.2 h·mcg/mL (relative bioavailability 20%). No interaction was detected with sucralfate tablets because tablet fragments were visible in faeces, indicating that the tablets did not disintegrate and were not effective.
Recommendation: Separate administration by 2 hours: give doxycycline first and sucralfate 2 hours later. With this schedule, bioavailability is 74% and is not statistically different from doxycycline alone.
