Evidence confidence: Medium Georgia: Yes, veterinary · Verified on 22 Oct 2026

A credible exact-label topical antibiotic for a narrow, confirmed susceptible superficial lesion—not an empirical all-purpose wound spray. Modern stewardship favours antiseptics first, and absent direct oxytetracycline outcome trials cap efficacy.

Regulatory and scientific credibility8.5/10

The exact 4 g/150 ml product has a current regulator-hosted Romanian authorisation that includes dogs and cats, plus current Georgian registration. A current VMD exact-formulation SPC independently resolves 4 g/150 ml as 3.92% w/w and transparently lists the aerosol composition, although GB authorises only cattle and sheep.

Clinical efficacy5.5/10

The exact label supports susceptible superficial bacterial lesions and modern ISCAID guidance supports topical therapy for canine surface/superficial pyoderma. However, antiseptics are preferred, oxytetracycline has no identified direct canine outcome trial in that review, resistance can be common and deep disease is beyond topical reach.

Safety and tolerability7.0/10

Topical absorption is expected to be negligible and current exact-formulation SPC reports no known target-animal adverse events, but that safety record is from cattle/sheep. Eye exposure, inhalation, hypersensitivity, local irritation, licking and the extremely flammable pressurised aerosol remain meaningful preventable risks.

Clinical practicality6.5/10

The ready-to-use, invertible marker-dye spray covers focal lesions without compounding, but cleaning plus three applications daily until healing is a real home-treatment burden. Ventilation, 18–20 cm distance, lick control, fire safety and rechecks limit convenience compared with suitable antiseptic leave-on options.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Current Georgian full-course price and patient-specific can wastage were unavailable; price is excluded from the denominator.

Important safety and use flags

  • Use only for a veterinarian-confirmed superficial bacterial lesion with plausible oxytetracycline susceptibility. It is not a routine disinfectant, healing accelerator or empirical spray for every wound.
  • Perform cytology before antimicrobial treatment. Prefer a suitable effective antiseptic when possible; if response is poor or disease recurs, reassess diagnosis and obtain culture/susceptibility rather than repeating blindly.
  • Do not rely on surface aerosol for deep pyoderma, cellulitis, abscess, devitalised tissue, bite wound, spreading pain/swelling, fever or systemic illness. Examine, drain/debride and add systemic treatment when indicated.
  • Clean the lesion, shake well and apply from about 18–20 cm for 1–2 seconds per lesion three times daily until healed. Recheck the patient; do not continue indefinitely without confirming clinical and cytological response.
  • External cutaneous use only. Do not spray in or near the eyes, face or mucosa and do not allow inhalation. Use in a well-ventilated space and prevent licking or grooming until fully dry.
  • Extremely flammable pressurised aerosol: keep away from flames, cigarettes, sparks, hot surfaces and sunlight. Do not pierce or burn the can, even when empty; store dry below 25°C.
  • Wear impermeable gloves, wash hands and splashes promptly, and avoid contact if hypersensitive to tetracyclines. Stop and reassess local irritation, dermatitis or suspected animal hypersensitivity.
  • Do not apply simultaneously with solutions containing metal salts because tetracyclines can interact with them. Document other topical agents and avoid unassessed mixing on the lesion.
  • Painful lesions may require analgesia and low-stress handling before cleaning or spraying. Poor restraint and close-range spraying increase eye, inhalation and uneven-coverage risk.
  • The exact Romanian dog/cat label supports this regimen, while the current GB label is cattle/sheep only. Do not transfer GB foot-condition schedules or food-animal claims to dogs or cats.

A legally supported but weakly studied feline option for a narrow susceptible superficial lesion. Aerosol stress, grooming exposure and absence of direct feline outcome data make it a fallback rather than a routine first choice.

Clinical efficacy4.5/10

The exact Romanian label includes cats and topical therapy is clinically plausible for local superficial infection, but direct feline oxytetracycline-spray outcome evidence was not identified. Feline pyoderma is less well studied, susceptibility is essential and deeper disease or an abscess needs source control and/or systemic therapy.

Safety and tolerability6.5/10

Limited skin absorption is reassuring, but direct feline safety data for repeated whole-course use are sparse. Grooming increases oral exposure risk, aerosol sound/mist can stress the patient, and eye/inhalation exposure, irritation and highly flammable propellant require active control.

Clinical practicality5.5/10

No compounding is needed, but three daily aerosol applications, accurate lesion targeting, ventilation, drying and reliable lick prevention are relatively burdensome in many cats. Noise/mist aversion and facial avoidance can make safe coverage difficult; a suitable non-aerosol antiseptic may be easier.

  • Do not apply simultaneously with solutions containing metal salts because tetracyclines can interact with them. Document other topical agents and avoid unassessed mixing on the lesion.
  • Cats may resist aerosol noise and mist and then groom the treated site. If safe targeting and reliable lick prevention are not feasible, choose an appropriate non-aerosol alternative rather than forcing repeated exposure.
  • The exact Romanian dog/cat label supports this regimen, while the current GB label is cattle/sheep only. Do not transfer GB foot-condition schedules or food-animal claims to dogs or cats.

Known Contraindications

  • Critical
Do not use oxytetracycline in patients with hypersensitivity to oxytetracycline or another tetracycline.
  • Critical
Oxytetracycline crosses the placenta and is not recommended in late pregnancy. Tetracycline deposition can discolor developing teeth, cause enamel hypoplasia and reduced mineralisation, and delay fetal skeletal development. If no alternative exists, use only after a benefit-risk assessment.
  • Warning
Avoid oxytetracycline in young growing animals because it is deposited in developing teeth and bones and can cause yellow, brown, or grey discoloration and impaired mineralisation.
  • Warning (Dog)
Do not administer this oxytetracycline formulation intravenously to dogs. Use only a route authorised for the selected product.
  • Warning (Cat)
Do not administer this oxytetracycline formulation intravenously to cats. Use only a route authorised for the selected product.
  • Caution
Use oxytetracycline cautiously in hepatic impairment. Hepatic toxicity is a rare adverse effect, and dose reduction may be necessary.
  • Caution
Use oxytetracycline cautiously in renal impairment; dose reduction may be necessary.

Known Drug Interactions

  • Major warning Oxytetracycline + Benzathine Benzylpenicillin
Do not give oxytetracycline at the same time as bactericidal antimicrobials such as penicillins or cephalosporins because their antibacterial effects may be antagonistic.
    Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently.
  • Major warning Oxytetracycline + Ceftriaxone
Do not give oxytetracycline at the same time as bactericidal antimicrobials such as penicillins or cephalosporins because their antibacterial effects may be antagonistic.
    Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently.
  • Major warning Amoxicillin + Oxytetracycline
Do not give oxytetracycline at the same time as bactericidal antimicrobials such as penicillins or cephalosporins because their antibacterial effects may be antagonistic.
    Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently.
  • Major warning Ampicillin + Oxytetracycline
Do not give oxytetracycline at the same time as bactericidal antimicrobials such as penicillins or cephalosporins because their antibacterial effects may be antagonistic.
    Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently.
  • Major warning Oxytetracycline + Procaine Benzylpenicillin
Do not give oxytetracycline at the same time as bactericidal antimicrobials such as penicillins or cephalosporins because their antibacterial effects may be antagonistic.
    Recommendation: Do not administer concurrently.
  • Minor warning Oxytetracycline + Calcium Carbonate
Divalent and trivalent cations, including magnesium, iron, aluminium, and calcium, can chelate oxytetracycline and reduce its absorption. Do not give it at the same time as milk or antacids.
Recommendation: Separate this medicine from oral oxytetracycline in time.
  • Minor warning Oxytetracycline + Calcium chloride
Do not mix oxytetracycline with calcium-containing infusion solutions because they are physically incompatible.
Recommendation: Do not mix oxytetracycline with lactated Ringer solution or run them through the same line.
  • Minor warning Oxytetracycline + Magnesium Carbonate
Divalent and trivalent cations, including magnesium, iron, aluminium, and calcium, can chelate oxytetracycline and reduce its absorption. Do not give it at the same time as milk or antacids.
