vetman assessment
vetman’s 10-point assessment brings together a product’s regulatory credibility, clinical efficacy, safety and practicality. Cost-effectiveness is assessed only when reliable data are available. It is informational and does not replace a veterinarian’s clinical judgment for an individual patient.

Frontline Spray

0.25%, fipronil 2.5 mg/ml, cutaneous spray 100 ml (0.5 ml per pump) for dogs and cats
Assessed clinical scopeDog · Full labelled canine scope: treatment and prevention of flea and tick infestations, control of species-specific biting lice, and use within a veterinarian-diagnosed flea-allergy-dermatitis strategy · On the skin
Care settingWhole-coat treatment after accurate weighing, with the exact pump output and coat length used to calculate dose; environmental flea control added when indicated
vetman score 8.2/10 Very good
Evidence confidence: High Georgia: Yes, veterinary · № 84-11 · Verified on 15 Oct 2026

A mature, directly studied and locally registered whole-coat fipronil option with broad labelled ectoparasite coverage. Its main trade-off is demanding dose-by-coat application and greater handler exposure rather than weak efficacy.

Regulatory and scientific credibility9.0/10

Both exact pump presentations are currently registered in Georgia and the same 0.25% product remains authorised by the UK VMD, with an official SPC and a regulatory history dating to 1994.

Clinical efficacy8.5/10

Product-specific field and controlled studies support labelled flea and species-specific biting-louse control in dogs and cats, while the current label supports ticks and residual activity. Outcome still depends on complete coat-to-skin coverage, dose accuracy and environmental challenge.

Safety and tolerability8.0/10

Systemic absorption is negligible and labelled-dose tolerability is generally favourable, including puppies from 2 days of age. Whole-coat alcohol exposure, licking, rare skin or neurologic reactions, flammability and rabbit/aquatic toxicity still require strict precautions.

Clinical practicality6.5/10

Dose is weight- and coat-length dependent and requires full coat wetting: 6-12 pump actions/kg with the 100 ml bottle or 2-4/kg with the 250/500 ml bottle, plus gloves, ventilation, fire precautions and natural drying. This is materially more laborious than a pipette.

Full-course cost-effectiveness-

Price was not assessed and is excluded from the overall score.

Important safety and use flags

  • Never use on rabbits; serious reactions and death can occur. Do not use on sick, febrile or convalescent animals.
  • The hydro-alcoholic spray is highly flammable. Apply outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, away from flame and heat; do not inhale it, and keep the animal away from heat until the coat is completely dry.
  • Weigh accurately, dampen the entire coat down to the skin and prevent licking or mutual grooming until dry. Avoid eyes and broken skin; head application should be made via a gloved hand.
  • Do not use simultaneously with another flea product applied directly to the animal. Treat in-contact animals with an appropriate product and manage bedding and the environment when infestation is established.
  • Single ticks may still attach and infection transmission cannot be completely excluded. The product is not a repellent and is not for direct environmental treatment.
  • Fipronil is hazardous to aquatic organisms. Keep treated dogs out of watercourses for 2 days and prevent product or containers from contaminating water.
